Warning: The following story contains information regarding alleged domestic abuse and physical violence against children.
GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. – Lilburn Police Captain Scott Bennett said that authorities arrested a 41-year-old man following a welfare check after an out-of-state relative called police to report she had not been able to get a hold of her mother or brother for several days. Jaynell Treymar Edwards, currently housed at the Gwinnett County Jail, faces several charges, including two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of malice murder, and two counts of tampering with evidence, jail records indicated.
Edwards allegedly killed his girlfriend and her son on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, disposed of their bodies, and drove her vehicle for at least two days before police conducted a traffic stop on him due to suspected driving under the influence. Edwards was booked into the jail on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, and remains incarcerated without bond.
Authorities identified the victims as Melissa Teran, 45, and Kevin Weir, 23. He is accused of stabbing them to death with a kitchen knife inside their home on Birdlake Drive. Police disclosed that the three lived at the home together but no motive has been released at this time.
Captain Bennett revealed that although it did not appear that any incidents were reported to police, “There have been issues in the past in the household between the mother’s boyfriend and her son.” He explained that officers noted the victim’s vehicle was gone from the residence when they responded for a welfare check, and they later determined he had been driving it around.
After being pulled over, Edwards was transported to an unnamed mental health facility for evaluation. He admitted to the murders while being interviewed by investigators.
Captain Bennett said, “He essentially told us what he had done and where he had placed the bodies.” Bennett noted that this tragedy marked Lilburn’s first double homicide in the past two decades.
This case is currently pending in court.
