CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. – A man died early Monday morning after being struck by a vehicle while trying to run from Clayton County deputies on the Interstate 75/85 connector, authorities said.
The incident began around 3:30 a.m. when deputies attempted to stop a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado. The pickup truck failed to yield, prompting a brief chase. Law enforcement performed a PIT maneuver, which brought the truck to a stop just south of Arthur Langford Parkway.
According to the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on the expressway. Georgia State Patrol (GSP) officials said the man fell during his escape, and another vehicle initially stopped to avoid hitting him.
However, a second car was unable to stop in time and struck the rear of the first car, which then collided with the suspect, killing him at the scene.
Investigators said marijuana was found in the pickup truck, and the driver’s license of the deceased had been suspended 12 times.
The crash caused major traffic delays on the Downtown Connector, with the exit ramp to SR 166 closed for hours. Georgia Department of Transportation crews reported that traffic began moving again around 5:50 a.m., and all lanes were eventually reopened after emergency responders cleared the scene.
The name of the man who died has not been released.
