Man taken to hospital after being shot multiple times during dice game in Baxley

The following was taken from a press release distributed by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation on January 8, 2024:

APPLING COUNTY, Ga. – The GBI has arrested and charged Mako Jones, Jr., age 19, of Baxley, Georgia, with Aggravated Assault and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony. Jones turned himself in to the Appling County Jail on January 4, 2024. On Tuesday, January 2, 2024, the Baxley Police Department asked the GBI to investigate. 

The investigation shows that Jones shot Mike Sims, age 31, of Baxley, GA, multiple times while they were near Hopps Street. Sims and Jones were both involved in a dice game at the time of the shooting. Sims was eventually taken to a hospital where he remains in stable condition. 

This investigation is active and ongoing. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Baxley Police Department at (912) 367-8305 or the GBI Regional Investigative Office in Douglas at (912) 389-4103.
