COBB COUNTY, Ga. – A man and a woman have been arrested after a child in their care was hospitalized following a drug overdose in Cobb County last month, according to arrest warrants.
James Coalson and Devan Adams are each charged with second-degree cruelty to children in connection with the incident, which occurred Dec. 28 at a home in Mableton. Jail records show Coalson is also facing several additional charges, including multiple drug-related offenses, a weapons charge and willful obstruction of a law enforcement officer.
According to arrest warrants, officers were called to a home off Lake Circle around 11:30 a.m. after reports of a child who was unresponsive. When police arrived, they found the child blue and not breathing while seated in a living room recliner. The child was rushed by ambulance to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta with a police escort.
Investigators said blood tests later revealed the child had been exposed to fentanyl and opioids. Medical staff administered large amounts of Narcan over roughly 20 hours to keep the child breathing, according to the warrants.
During a search of the home, officers found suspected oxycodone, muscle relaxants and heroin, the warrants state. Investigators said some of the drugs, including oxycodone, were stored in places easily accessible to a child, such as an unlocked nightstand drawer.
Coalson was arrested on Dec. 29, while Adams was taken into custody on Jan. 2, according to jail records. Both remain held at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center without bond.
Authorities have not disclosed the child’s age or condition following treatment, nor have they said whether the child is related to either suspect. The investigation remains ongoing.
