ROCKDALE COUNTY, Ga. – A metro Atlanta man already facing charges for allegedly hiding his HIV-positive status from sexual partners is now facing murder charges following the death of his wife.
On Monday, a Rockdale County grand jury indicted Cleveland Broadie on charges of malice murder and felony murder in connection with the death of Denise Broadie. He was previously charged with three counts of reckless conduct and has pleaded not guilty to those charges. He has not yet entered a plea on the new murder counts.
Denise Broadie was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2017 and entered remission shortly afterward. The cancer returned in 2019, leading to extended hospital stays and rounds of chemotherapy. Although doctors later said the cancer had cleared again, her health continued to decline.
Eventually, she was transferred to a different medical facility where new tests revealed she had AIDS.
Prosecutors claim that Denise’s illness and death were the result of what they describe as her husband’s “reckless conduct.” They allege Cleveland Broadie had known he was HIV-positive since 2006 and failed to inform his wife or other sexual partners of his condition.
Authorities arrested Cleveland Broadie on July 8, 2023, more than a year after Denise’s death. His arrest was based on one count of reckless conduct. After a judge denied bond, prosecutors filed a second identical charge when another woman came forward, alleging Broadie had unprotected sex with her without disclosing his HIV status.
A third warrant was issued on Sept. 5, 2023.
The three reckless conduct charges stem from multiple women who contacted authorities following media coverage of the case.
Each reckless conduct charge carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison.
This case is currently pending in court.
