More than 20 animals rescused from severe hoarding case in Murray County

MURRAY COUNTY, Ga. – Animal control officers have rescued 15 dogs and eight cats from what authorities describe as a severe hoarding situation at a single residence in Murray County.

The animals were found living in “severely unsanitary and dangerous conditions,” according to the Murray County Animal Shelter. Officials said additional animals could still be removed as the rescue operation continues.

“These dogs and cats have been living in a terrible state of neglect,” the shelter said in a statement. “They are frightened, likely medically compromised, and need urgent intervention.”

None of the rescued animals are currently available for adoption due to their fragile condition, shelter officials said. The pets will need time to decompress and receive full veterinary treatment, including spaying and neutering, before undergoing behavioral assessments.

The shelter is urgently seeking donations to cover immediate costs including intake, emergency stabilization and medical care for each animal. Supporters can also drop off towels, blankets, cleaning supplies and pet food at the facility.

Licensed animal rescue organizations are being asked to help with the influx of animals. The shelter is requesting that 501(c)(3) rescue groups willing to accept dogs or cats send a private message with their rescue name, state license number and the number of animals they can accommodate.

Shelter staff said they are unable to answer phones during the rescue effort and ask that all communication be sent through private message.

Donations can be made online through the Murray County Animal Shelter’s website.

The investigation is ongoing.
