Newton County – A Covington man, Marquez Smith, turned himself into the Newton County Sheriff’s Office on Monday after shooting his ex-wife and her boyfriend.
Both victims were killed.
The shooting occurred during a custody exchange, wherein Smith’s 15-year-old daughter resisted going with her father.
Smith retrieved a firearm from inside his home and shot his ex-wife and her boyfriend as they sat in their vehicle. Both Smith’s teenage daughter and an infant were present at the time of the shooting.
Smith fled the scene. He turned himself in several hours later. He was booked into the Newton County Jail and charged with two counts of Murder, two counts of Aggravated Assault, Cruelty to Children in the 1st Degree, Parole Violation, and firearm-related charges.
Smith was due in court Tuesday.
