FULTON COUNTY, Ga. – Amazon MGM Studios has tapped Zac Efron to star alongside Will Ferrell in a comedy film, “Judgment Day,” directed by Nicholas Stoller. The project is ramping up pre-production following the success of “You’re Cordially Invited,” which also saw Stoller in the director’s chair.
Efron will take on the role of a young convict who, freshly released from prison, stages a dramatic hostage situation in a reality TV courtroom. The convict, blaming a TV judge played by Ferrell for a past legal ruling he believes ruined his life, demands justice in his own hands.
The screenplay was also penned by Stoller, who will produce the film through his Stoller Global Solutions banner. Ferrell is producing under his Gloria Sanchez Productions label alongside Jessica Elbaum and Alex Brown.
This collaboration marks another significant project for Efron with Amazon MGM Studios, following his role in “Ricky Stanicky,” a comedy directed by Peter Farrelly that debuted on Prime Video last year.
The actor has been busy in recent months, having wrapped production on “Famous,” a thriller directed by Jody Hill. In the film, Efron portrays both a Hollywood heartthrob and a fan obsessed with celebrity culture. Based on a novel by Blake Crouch, “Famous” is set to be released by A24, the same company behind Efron’s well-received role in “The Iron Claw,” a film about the Von Erich family of professional wrestlers.
Ferrell is currently starring opposite Reese Witherspoon in Stoller’s “You’re Cordially Invited,” which has become a global hit on Prime Video. The film’s success has set high expectations for the duo’s next project, which promises to bring their comedic talents together in a new and inventive way.
