FULTON COUNTY, Ga. – St. Francis High School celebrated one of its most accomplished alums this week, honoring former basketball standout Maya Dodson by retiring her No. 15 jersey during a ceremony attended by students, faculty, and local community members.
Dodson, who rose to prominence as a key player on the school’s back-to-back state championship teams in 2015 and 2016, returned to her alma mater for the event. Her storied high school career included national recognition as a McDonald’s All-American and selection as the 2017 Gatorade Player of the Year in Georgia.
The ceremony marked a significant moment in the school’s athletic history, reflecting not only Dodson’s individual success but also her lasting impact on the St. Francis basketball program. Her jersey will ultimately be displayed in the school gymnasium, commemorating a player who helped define a championship era.
Beyond her high school accolades, Dodson captained the U-17 U.S. national team to a bronze medal at the FIBA World Championships and excelled academically, graduating as valedictorian. Her accomplishments earned her opportunities at two of the nation’s most prestigious collegiate programs, Stanford University and the University of Notre Dame, where she completed her degrees while continuing to develop her game.
Dodson went on to be selected 26th overall in the 2022 WNBA Draft by the Phoenix Mercury and has played professionally both in the United States and overseas. Most recently, she has been competing in Spain while continuing to build a promising basketball career.
For the current students and aspiring athletes in attendance, the ceremony served as a reminder of what can be achieved through dedication, leadership, and perseverance. Dodson’s legacy at St. Francis extends beyond statistics and trophies, representing the broader values of academic excellence, sportsmanship, and resilience.
Her story continues to inspire the next generation of players at St. Francis and beyond, as the school now permanently honors one of its finest with a place among its legends.
