On Friday, July 14, 2026, at 12:46 a.m., I (Officer Hart) was dispatched to 216 East 1st St for a fight in progress. I ran lights and sirens to the call because we got confirmation that the fight was still in progress and one was now on the ground.

Upon arrival, Officer Jackson had split up the fight and had Joseph Adams sitting on the curb, and he had Jammie Daniels sitting on the bus bench near the back side of his car. Officer Jackson was asking Jammie for his side of the story when I came up. Jammie explained that this started at 401 East 2nd Ave, where he saw Joseph sleeping against the building with a beer in his hand.

Jammie stated that he woke him up, and Joseph stood up, grabbed a stick, and attempted to hit him with it. Jammie stated he attempted to leave and make his way to 216 East 1st St. Once he arrived there, he stated that Joseph started chasing him and trying to punch him in the face. Jammie stated that he hit Joseph while trying to defend himself.

During this time, Joseph interrupted Jammie and started to shout racial slurs about Jammie. Jammie forcefully got off the bench and started to charge toward Joseph with his fist, balled up, making direct eye contact. Joseph stood up and attempted to charge toward Jammie but was stopped by Officer Wilbanks. I stepped in front of Jammie and ordered him to sit back down and he complied. At this time, Joseph was detained due to his actions.

After talking to Jammie, I walked over to Joseph, and he admitted to Officer Jackson in front of me that he had been drinking. The odor of an alcoholic beverage was coming from Joseph. I asked him what happened, but his speech was slurred, and he was not able to explain his side of the altercation very well.

We observed that there were cameras that might have seen the fight take place, and Officer Vandenhoek called and informed us that the altercation had taken place at the bus stop started when Jammie charged toward Joseph, where they got in each other’s face, Jammie put his finger in Joseph’s face, then used his closed right hand to strike Joseph in the left side of his face. Joseph chased Jammie around trying to hit him back.

After hearing Jammie had hit Joseph in the face, I asked Joseph if he wanted to press charges against Jammie, and he stated no. Due to both parties engaging in the fight I decided to arrest both of them. Joseph was transported to Floyd County Jail by Officer Wilbanks. I placed Jammie in handcuffs, double-locked them, and checked for fit. Once he was searched, Jammie was placed in the back of my patrol car, where we put his seatbelt on. Jammie was transported to Floyd County Jail. The back of the patrol car was searched before and after transport.

Once in the jail, jail staff informed me that Joseph needed to be medically cleared before he could be booked in. I transported Joseph to Atrium Health Floyd. At the hospital, Joseph was stumbling and yelling obscenities. Officer Alamia took over at the hospital. He was medically cleared at 4:03 p.m. He was transported back to Floyd County Jail by Officer Alamia.

Footage of the fight at the bus stop was uploaded to Axon. Footage at 401 E 2nd Ave was requested, but staff did not know how to check.
