Warning: The following report describes alleged violence against animals.
FULTON COUNTY, Ga. – A case of animal cruelty has led to the arrest of a Fulton County man who is accused of torturing a dog for months. Authorities say Jairus Ming Scraders, a convicted felon and alleged gang member, subjected the dog to horrific abuse for over three months, resulting in severe injuries that ultimately led to the animal’s paralysis and death.
The Fulton County Police Animal Services Division, working in coordination with the SWAT Team, executed a search warrant at Scraders’ home on Country Club Drive in Atlanta last week. During the investigation, it was discovered that Scraders had been recording his abusive actions toward the dog.
Authorities reported that the abuse culminated in an incident where the dog suffered a fractured skull and multiple broken bones, leading to its paralysis. Due to the extent of its injuries, the dog had to be euthanized.
In addition to the one dog that was put down, animal control officials removed three other dogs from the residence. The conditions at the home were described as being appalling, with filthy floors covered in dog urine and feces, a severe infestation of roaches and spiders, and a lack of essential utilities such as running water and adequate electricity.
The situation worsened when police learned two children were also living inside the home. Due to the unsanitary and dangerous living conditions, the Division of Family and Child Services stepped in and removed the children.
At the time of his arrest, Scraders was out on bond for other felony charges in a different jurisdiction. Additionally, Amira Wilkins, who was present at the residence, was arrested on unrelated felony charges.
Scraders now faces two counts of aggravated animal cruelty in connection with the abuse. In response to the case, the Fulton County Police Department reaffirmed its commitment to protecting both people and animals within the community, stating, “The mission of the Fulton County Police Department is to protect and serve our community, which includes our animals.”
This case is currently pending in court.
