FULTON COUNTY, Ga. – With Governor Brian Kemp’s second term nearing its end, several candidates have expressed interest in pursuing the vacancy. One candidate, a Democratic Representative of Georgia’s 6th Congressional District, Lucy McBath, recently filed paperwork to possibly run for the position.
Representative McBath, 64, described her actions as exploratory; however, many believe she will campaign. A Delta Sigma Theta Sorority member, she graduated from Virginia State University and worked as a flight attendant for Delta Airlines.
She won a seat in the House in 2018 and became a fierce advocate for gun safety following the 2012 death of her son at a Jacksonville, Florida, gas station. Her 17-year-old son, Jordan Davis, was reportedly gunned down and murdered by a white male who became irate because of loud music played by Davis and his friends.
McBath has expressed support for making background checks for firearms tougher, making it more difficult for violent offenders, like domestic abuse perpetrators, to access guns. She has also supported red flag laws that help facilitate the removal of firearms from dangerous individuals.
The past six races for Georgia governor have been won by Republican candidates. In November, Chris Carr, the Republican Attorney General and the first candidate to announce intentions to run, expressed his interest in entering this next race.
Officials listed several individuals who may also run for governor, including Democrats Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, Senator Jason Esteves, former Senator Jason Carter (the late President Jimmy Carter’s grandson), and DeKalb County Chief Executive Officer Mike Thurmond. Republicans who may announce gubernatorial bids include Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones.
