FULTON COUNTY, Ga. – Former NFL cornerback Darryl “Buster” Skrine has been arrested in Roswell on 18 charges tied to what police describe as a multi-state fraud scheme targeting women through online dating platforms. Authorities say Skrine is also wanted in Canada, where he is accused in a separate $100,000 check fraud case.
Roswell police began investigating Skrine in July after a woman reported being financially exploited. Detectives said Skrine approached women online, shared fabricated stories about financial struggles, and promised to repay them using his NFL annuity. Instead, investigators said, he spent the money on travel, Airbnb rentals, and gift cards.
So far, police have identified three victims in Wisconsin, North Carolina, and New York, who together lost about $300,000. Investigators believe there may be additional victims across the country.
Skrine was taken into custody on Wednesday morning at a home on Pine Grove Road in Roswell. He is facing a long list of charges, including deposit account fraud, identity fraud, financial transaction card fraud, theft by taking, and criminal attempt to commit theft.
Authorities said Skrine is also a fugitive in Canada. Durham Regional Police arrested him in August 2023 in connection with a $100,000 check fraud case. He was released on bail in April 2024 with a GPS monitor, but later removed the device and fled back to the United States, investigators said.
Roswell police are coordinating with Canadian officials to ensure he faces charges in both countries. The case remains under investigation, and anyone who believes they may be a victim is urged to contact Detective Fields at 770-640-4455 or submit tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers Atlanta at 404-577-TIPS or StopCrimeATL.org.
Skrine, 36, grew up in Cherokee County and played football at Etowah High School before attending the University of Tennessee Chattanooga. He went on to play 11 seasons in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns, New York Jets, Chicago Bears, San Francisco 49ers, and Tennessee Titans before retiring in 2022.
