FULTON COUNTY, Ga. – Paraguayan midfielder Miguel Almirón is returning to Atlanta United but will see several new faces, including a new head coach, president and CEO, and sporting director. The 30-year-old played for the team for two seasons from 2017 to 2018, during which they won the 2018 MLS Cup.
In 2019, Almirón was moved to Newcastle United in the English Premier League and played strongly with them for six seasons. During that time, he had six assists and made 23 goals, 11 of which were recorded in one season: 2022 to 2023.
Two years ago, Almirón visited Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium as a Newcastle United player against Chelsea in the Premier League Series. He scored the one goal for his team in the 1-1 draw. The crowd vehemently applauded him and cheered his name while presenting him with a standing ovation.
Chief Soccer Officer and Sporting Director Chris Henderson expressed, “We’re thrilled to welcome Miguel back to Atlanta United and know we’re getting a top player and someone with excellent character.”
Along with a new head coach, president and CEO, and sporting director, Almirón will be surrounded by new clubmates. The only player from his original group is goalkeeper Brad Guzan.
According to reports, Almirón said, “I’m very happy to return to Atlanta United, a club and city that has always held a special place in my heart. I’m grateful to Arthur M. Blank and the entire organization for the opportunity, and I’m looking forward to reuniting with the fans at Mercedes-Benz Stadium and creating more moments of joy together.”
Almirón’s contract with Atlanta United is through 2027, including an option for 2028. His spot on the roster will include designated player and international, pending the transmission of his paperwork.
