On Wednesday, January 28, 2026, at approximately 5:30 p.m., Deputy Ellington #522 assigned to UPD with the Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office and I, Deputy Moseley #723, assigned to FTO with the Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office at UPD, were dispatched to meet with [VICTIM #1] in the Gilmer County Courthouse parking lot in reference to a hit and run that occurred on Chatsworth Hwy. earlier in the day. We responded Code 1 (no lights or sirens) in Unit #1524.
We arrived at approximately 5:50 p.m. and met with Ms. [VICTIM #1] who was standing outside the car crying and her two children were present in her vehicle. We could see the extensive damage to the front bumper of Ms. [VICTIM #1]’s car on the driver side. Ms. [VICTIM #1]’s bumper was destroyed and the entire front driver side portion was smashed in. Almost every warning light on the dash of the car was on from the amount of damage.
When we arrived, Ms. [VICTIM #1] was standing outside the car crying. We asked Ms. [VICTIM #1] to tell us what happened. Ms. [VICTIM #1] stated that she was driving east on Chatsworth Hwy. with her son, [REDACTED BY AGENCY] (Juvenile 1) and her daughter, [REDACTED BY AGENCY], (Juvenile 2). Ms. [VICTIM #1] stated that her children’s father, Abraham Chanax, was driving his truck west on Chatsworth Hwy. and she stated when he saw her, he drove over into the east bound lane in front of Ms. [VICTIM #1].
Ms. [VICTIM #1] stated she stopped her vehicle and was trying to put her vehicle in reverse to go around him. Ms. [VICTIM #1] stated Mr. Chanax drove his truck into the front of her car and proceeded to push her vehicle backwards with his truck. Ms. [VICTIM #1] stated she then placed the car in reverse and was able to drive around him.
Ms. [VICTIM #1] stated that she was terrified and left the scene and then went to the courthouse to attempt to get a temporary protective order and then came outside and called us. Ms. [VICTIM #1] told us this incident was due to Mr. Chanax not being able to find his passport and planning to go to Mexico the following day.
Throughout the entire interaction with Ms. [VICTIM #1] she appeared and sounded terrified of Mr. Chanax. We asked Ms. [VICTIM #1] if her and Mr. Chanax had any prior law enforcement involvement in their relationship. Ms. [VICTIM #1] stated that she and Mr. Chanax had had several arguments in the past and Mr. Chanax would always threaten to take away her car.
Ms. [VICTIM #1] stated that Mr. Chanax had never threatened to harm her or the kids and that law enforcement had never been involved. Ms. [VICTIM #1] stated that she had never seen Mr. Chanax so angry and prior arguments had never been bad; however, Ms. [VICTIM #1] later made a comment about “the last time” something like this happened but would not go into detail.
Ms. [VICTIM #1] stated after the incident, Mr. Chanax called her a few times and she recorded the calls because she was afraid he would threaten her or that he might say something about the incident. In one of the recordings, Juvenile 1 asked Mr. Chanax if he was going to hit Ms. [VICTIM #1]’s car again to which Mr. Chanax replied he did not know.
I asked Ms. [VICTIM #1] if the children ever stayed with their father to which she responded Juvenile 1 sometimes spends the night but Juvenile 2 was not comfortable with Mr. Chanax yet and never stayed with him.
Deputy Ellington and I stayed with Ms. [VICTIM #1] and her children while they sat in the back of the patrol car, as her vehicle’s heat was no longer working, until a family member could come pick them up. Rear seat camera was activated.
Ms. [VICTIM #1] was provided a victims advocate pamphlet with the case number and our names and badge numbers as well as a business card with the number to the Georgia Crisis Network. A DFCS referral was made, during which I spoke to [REDACTED]. She was unable to provide a case number. The on-call detective was contacted.
Warrants were taken on Mr. Chanax for Aggravated Assaul Family Violence, Criminal Damage to Property in the First Degree, Cruelty to Children in the Third Degree, Reckless Driving, and Hit and Run.
