On June 26, 2026 at approximately 1955 hours, I arrived on scene to a motor vehicle collision with injuries. I observed Vehicle 1 (V1) facing Northbound crashed into an electrical pole on South corner of the 2800 block of Altama Avenue with airbag deployment and disabling damage to the front end as well as damage to the passenger side of V1 at final rest. I observed Vehicle 2 (V2) facing Eastbound on R Street with disabling damage to the front end of the vehicle at final rest.
Contact was made with Driver 1 (D1), who stated he was at the light intersection of Altama Avenue and R Street attempting to turn left to go Eastbound on R Street when the crash occurred. He stated he had a green light and that Vehicle 2 (V2) crashed into him when he was turning left on the green light. V1 had a front passenger who was transported to the ER by Rescue 11.
When contact was made with D1 I could smell a strong odor of alcohol coming from his breath as well as his speech was slurred when telling me what had happened. I asked D1 if he had had anything to drink before driving and he advised me he had not.
Contact was made with Driver 2 (D2), who stated she was traveling Northbound the intersection of Altama Avenue and R Street when she saw V1 come out of nowhere turning. D1 stated she tried to dodge the truck to avoid a crash but that they ended up crashing into V1.
Contact was made with Witness 1 (W1) who stated she was driving behind V1 and at while the light was green she stated V1 did not yield for oncoming Northbound traffic which is how V1 crashed into V2. W1 stated she pulled over to make sure people were okay and observed D1 get out of V1 with beer cans and pour them out in front by the pole that V1 crashed into.
Contact was made with Witness 2 (W2) who stated she did not see the crash occur but when she heard it she ran out of her work (located in the five points plaza on the 2800 block of Altama Avenue) to make sure people were okay in which she then observed D1 get out of V1 with no shoes on cans of beer in his hands. W2 stated that she observed D1 pour out the alcohol that was in the cans and throw them on the ground in front of the pole in which he hit. W2 stated she then observed D1 put bottles into his pocket and watched him walk across the street and then back to V1 when more people started showing up. W2 was sent a community request for Axon Evidence as she stated she took photos of what she saw.
Complaints of injuries were observed on V1’s front passenger for unknown reasons however she was transported to the ER by Rescue 11. Other injuries were reported on V2’s three rear passengers for their heads hurting in which none of them were transported to the ER but were cleared on scene by Rescue 9.
My investigation indicated Driver 1 was at fault for the collision due to failing to yield for oncoming traffic (OCGA 40-6-71), when V1 had a green light to turn left onto R Street, V2 (Southbound traffic) also had a green light in which V1 should not have turned left onto R Street until Southbound traffic lanes were cleared from all traffic.
During my investigation I concluded that it did appear that D1 was under the influence of alcohol due to the strong odor of alcohol on his breath and slurred speeach. D1 was placed into handcuffs and they were double locked and checked for tightness. D1 was searched incident to his arrest by Ofc. Lovett #491 and he was read implied consent by me in which he agreed to a blood test. D1 was then transported to the ER by me where a blood alcohol test was conducted by nurse [REDACTED] and other nurses performed an accident jail clearance.
D1 was then transported to the CDC where he was released to CDC staff and received the following citations;
Citation #195246 DUI Less Safe (OCGA 40-6-391(a) (1))
Citation #195247 Failure To Yield When Turning Left (OCGA 40-6-71)
D1 blood test had been entered into evidence and will be sent to the GBI crime lab for further testing.
