On Wednesday at approximately 2155 hours I responded to 90 Pilot Lane, Brunswick, GA in reference to a Domestic Disturbance.
Upon arrival, I spoke with [VICTIM #1], who advised that her and her boyfriend Thomas Woods had been in an argument. [VICTIM #1] first told me that they had been in an argument and nothing more. [VICTIM #1]’s demeanor while she told me this indicated that she was purposely withholding part of the story, giving short, clipped answers, avoiding eye contact, and saying she did not want to speak any further.
I relocated to the QuikTrip at 90 Pilot Lane to view security camera footage. In the footage, it appears that [VICTIM #1] and Thomas get into an argument in the parking lot of QuikTrip before going into the store and splitting up, exchanging a few more words, and then exiting the store. The two exchange more words outside for a short time before Thomas gets into his vehicle and drives to the parking lot exit. Thomas stops his vehicle near the exit, in between the store and the parking spots.
[VICTIM #1] approaches Thomas’ vehicle and enters the passenger side for a short time. She exits and walks back toward her vehicle. Thomas moves his vehicle further toward the exit and stops again. [VICTIM #1] enters the vehicle again for a short time until she exits carrying what appears to be large purse. Thomas leaves his vehicle and runs toward [VICTIM #1] at speed while she walks away. Thomas appears to try to tackle and grab [VICTIM #1] as she appears to attempt to back away. Thomas has a hold of [VICTIM #1], although it is unclear in the footage what he is holding.
[VICTIM #1] eventually appears to fall to the ground and Thomas walks away. [VICTIM #1] gets up and again begins to walk toward her vehicle, with Thomas following. [VICTIM #1] enters her vehicle just before Thomas gets to her and shuts her door, with Thomas immediately attempting to open the door. Thomas goes back to his vehicle, opens the rear hatch, and appears to drop several items on the sidewalk next to the vehicle before walking again back to [VICTIM #1]’s vehicle. Thomas opens her door after several tries and appears to talk to her for a short time.
Thomas then enters the vehicle and comes out with the large purse that [VICTIM #1] had been carrying. Thomas sifts through the purse while [VICTIM #1] tries to get it back, and then walks back to his vehicle. Thomas appears to put the items he had removed earlier back into his vehicle and walk into the store, looking back as if to say something to [VICTIM #1]. [VICTIM #1] stays in her vehicle for a few seconds and then exits. [VICTIM #1] stands outside of her vehicle for a short time before walking east away from both vehicles. Officers arrive a short time later and make contact with both parties.
QuikTrip staff advised me to complete an online request for the security footage at protectiveservices.quiktrip.com, which I have done.
I next spoke with Sgt. Rusch #124 who said that multiple witnesses had reported Thomas dragging and hitting [VICTIM #1] in the parking lot, with one stating that Thomas had been choking [VICTIM #1] out in her vehicle to the point that the witness considered drawing his firearm to defend her. Sgt. Rusch informed me that witnesses described Thomas picking up and dropping [VICTIM #1] in a “body slam”. Sgt. Rusch has completed a supplemental report describing witness statements.
I spoke again with [VICTIM #1] and she said that she had been in an argument with Thomas about buying pliers to remove her vehicles’ license plate because the vehicle was broken down. [VICTIM #1] stated Thomas began to leave in his vehicle, so she approached, asking him not to leave and eventually removing his keys from his vehicle before walking away. [VICTIM #1] said everything after that was a blur and she didn’t want to talk about it. I asked if [VICTIM #1] remembered being choked, and she said she didn’t want to talk about that. I asked if she had been choked in the car and [VICTIM #1] said “he probably could’ve been I don’t know”. I asked if [VICTIM #1] remembered getting picked up and thrown, which she replied that she did.
I spoke with Thomas, who had been advised of his Miranda Rights. Thomas said he had been in an argument with [VICTIM #1] about the pliers when she took his keys out of his car and put them in her purse. Thomas said they “tussled over” the purse until she fell back and returned to her vehicle. Thomas “banged on” the car door until she opened it. Thomas said he reached inside, grabbed the purse, and then grabbed the keys out of the purse, initially leaving out the physical altercation inside the vehicle entirely. Thomas said he did not choke or pick [VICTIM #1] up. Thomas said he then went to buy pliers before removing [VICTIM #1]’s license plate. Officers arrived a short time later.
Due to the witness statements Sgt. Rusch had described on scene, the video footage, and [VICTIM #1]’s statements, Thomas was initially placed under arrest for aggravated assault. After further review of the security footage and the witness statements, the charge was changed to Battery. Thomas was placed in double-locked handcuffs in the front due to his cast and searched for weapons and contraband, none were found. I placed Thomas in the back seat of my patrol vehicle and secured the seatbelt over him. I transported Thomas to the Glynn County Detention Center where he was booked and released to the jail staff.
