GORDON COUNTY, Ga. – The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the FBI have launched an investigation after a DEA agent shot two people during a traffic stop attempt late Tuesday night, officials confirmed.
According to authorities, the incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. on Outlet Center Drive when a member of Calhoun Police Department’s Special Operations Unit attempted to pull over a vehicle as part of a drug-related investigation.
Officials said the vehicle accelerated directly toward the DEA agent in what appeared to be an intentional act to hit him head-on. The agent fired into the vehicle, striking both the driver and a female passenger.
Officials confirmed that the FBI has since taken over the case.
“We can confirm that the stop was initiated by one of our marked units, and from our agency’s perspective, all actions taken were within policy,” Calhoun Police Chief Tony Pyle said in a statement. “All of our personnel are safe, and no local officers were injured during the incident.”
A spokesperson for the Drug Enforcement Administration said, “We take violence against our agents and partners extremely seriously. The matter is under investigation.”
Authorities have not released the names of the two individuals who were shot or their conditions.
Anyone with information related to the investigation is asked to contact the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
