On May 7, 2026, at approximately 0000 hours, I, Deputy Jeremiah Chandler with the Grady County Sheriff’s Office, was patrolling southbound in the area of Highway 93 South and Lower Cairo Road. While patrolling, EMC crews were actively working in the area on downed power lines. My radar unit (S/N KC260114) emitted a high Doppler tone pitch. I observed the in-car radar display indicate a speed of 115 miles per hour. I then observed a northbound vehicle pass my location at a high rate of speed. I conducted a safe U-turn, activated my emergency lights and sirens, and attempted to catch up to the vehicle. During the pursuit, I exceeded speeds of approximately 130 miles per hour in order to catch up to the vehicle. The vehicle eventually came to a stop in the area of Highway 93 South and Andrews Circle.
I made contact with the driver, who was identified as Nicholas Conti. I questioned Conti regarding his driving behavior, and he stated he was attempting to pass the emergency lights he had observed in the roadway. While speaking with Conti, I observed his speech to be slurred. Conti denied consuming any alcoholic beverages. Due to Conti’s excessive speed and reckless driving behavior, I placed him in handcuffs for officer safety. While continuing to speak with Conti, I detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from his person. Conti was then secured in the rear seat of my patrol vehicle.
An immediate area search of the vehicle was conducted. During the search, an alcoholic beverage in a cup was located in the front cupholder area of the vehicle. At approximately 0104 hours, the Georgia Implied Consent Notice for suspects age 21 and over was read to Conti. I requested that Conti submit to the state-administered chemical test of his breath. Conti verbally refused the test by stating “no.”
Conti was transported to the Grady County Detention Center without further incident. Conti was issued citations for DUI – Less Safe, Reckless Driving, Speeding, and Open Container. A DDS-1205 form was completed and issued. Conti was then turned over to jail staff for processing. The vehicle was impounded by Adam’s Towing.
