The following was taken from a press release distributed by the Gwinnett County Police Department on February 14, 2025:

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. – Gwinnett County Police Narcotics Investigators responded to multiple juvenile overdoses, with one that resulted in the death of a 14-year-old.

On Jan. 27, Narcotics Investigators responded to the overdose death of a 14-year-old in Norcross.  Investigators worked tirelessly to determine where the juvenile obtained the Fentanyl-laced Percocets.  They learned that the juvenile had purchased drugs from Brenda Alfaro-Alvarado (21, Norcross) on Jan. 23 and Jan. 27.  On Jan. 28, the Gwinnett Narcotics Unit arrested Alfao-Alvarado. She was charged with Aggravated Involuntary Manslaughter for Fentanyl Overdose Death, Possession with Intent to Distribute Schedule II Controlled Substance, Conspiracy to Violate Georgia Controlled Substance Act, Use of Communication Facility During Commission of a Felony, Cruelty to Children in the Second Degree, and Possession of a Schedule II Controlled Substance.  Alfaro-Alvarado is responsible for distributing drugs to multiple juveniles, resulting in overdoses that survived.

Determined to see the case through, Investigators continued to follow up on leads over the next several weeks.  They were able to locate the narcotics distributor that Alfaro-Alvarado obtained the fentanyl from that she provided to the 14-year-old victim.  On Feb. 11, Investigators charged Angel Alexander Nava-Nava (20, Norcross) with Aggravated Involuntary Manslaughter for Fentanyl Overdose Death, Sale of a Schedule II Controlled Substance, and Use of Facility during the Commission of a Felony.

Investigators conducted a search warrant on Nava-Nava’s residence and seized 2.1 grams of Fentanyl-laced Percocets, 4.9 grams of other Fentanyl, 155 grams of marijuana, two handguns, and $1700.  Investigators charged Nava-Nava with VGCSA Trafficking of Fentanyl, Possession of Schedule II Controlled Substance with Intent to Distribute, Criminal Attempt to Commit the Sale of Schedule II Controlled Substance, Possession of Over an Ounce of Marijuana, Possession of Firearms during the Commission of a Felony, and Willful Obstruction of a Law Enforcement Officer.

During the same time, the Narcotics Unit was investigating additional juvenile overdoses with surviving victims.  On Jan. 26, the Narcotics Unit responded to Norcross to investigate an overdose where a 12-year-old survived.  Investigators identified Antonio Molina Chavez as the distributor of the narcotics, and on Jan. 28, a search warrant was conducted at his residence.  Chavez was arrested and charged with VGCSA Sale of a Schedule I or II Controlled Substance, VGCSA Use of Communication Facility in the Commission of a Felony Involving a Controlled Substance, VGCSA Possession of a Schedule III Controlled Substance and Cruelty to Children in the Second Degree.  The Gwinnett County Police Department is dedicated to bringing those responsible for distributing fentanyl within the community to justice.

The Gwinnett County Police Department reminds the public that individuals who seek medical assistance in good faith for someone experiencing a drug overdose will not face arrest, charges, or prosecution for drug-related offenses solely related to seeking help.

Families are encouraged to have open discussions with their loved ones, particularly youth and young adults, about the dangers of experimenting with narcotics, illegally obtained prescription drugs, and counterfeit medications. Increasing awareness is a critical step in preventing overdoses and saving lives.

The Gwinnett County Narcotics Unit urges the community to assist in combating illicit drug activity. To report suspicious drug-related activity, call the narcotics tip line at 770.513.5480.
