GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. – Although not currently considered a suspect, authorities arrested a man in connection with the death of his pregnant 16-year-old ex-girlfriend. Mia Campos’ family discovered her body in the woods less than a mile from their residence on Monday, July 15, 2024, after she failed to return home.
Relatives said the victim left with an unknown person on Sunday night. Her father tracked her cell phone just after midnight and found her off the side of the roadway.
Officers responded to the Stephens Road location in Loganville at approximately 1:00 AM.
Her father explained, “Somehow, we came this way, and because I didn’t have a flashlight, I just had my phone. Then I said, ‘She’s right there.’ It just broke my heart. Thank God I found her.”
Officials revealed that initial evidence rendered determining the cause of death difficult; however, the medical examiner ruled her death a homicide after conducting an autopsy on Tuesday, July 16.
Mia’s father said, “I found my daughter [lying] face down. It was hard. I knew there was something wrong – her lips, her bleeding nose. They murdered my baby.”
The victim was seven months pregnant, and sources confirmed that Monroy was the father. Gwinnett County Police officers arrested Monroy on Wednesday, July 17, and charged him with providing false statements to police officers.
The victim’s father said he remains confident about getting answers. He stated, “Justice is coming soon.”

Mia’s mother is working to raise funds for the funeral and started an online fundraiser. On the GoFundMe page, she wrote, “Mia, my daughter, the girl of my eyes, my baby, has passed away with her son in her belly. I ask God to watch over her and her baby; now, she and my grandson are in Heaven with God.”
She continued, “I ask you for help to give her and her baby a dignified burial.”
Her parents said they received a positive sign about their daughter. Mia’s father stated, “You could see a little bird standing right there. And I told my wife, ‘She’s right there.'”
