On June 29th, 2023, I Sgt Z. Beam was conducting concentrated patrol in the area of GA-365 and Yonah Post Rd. While observing traffic I was notified by Dep Chapman of a Silver Kia SUV traveling Southbound at 89MPH in a posted 65MPH zone. As I approached the median of GA-365 I observed the vehicle coming towards me still traveling South Bound.

As I pulled out behind the vehicle I also observed it to have a tinted cover obstructing the entire license plate. I turned behind the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop on the Silver Kia bearing GA Tag [REDACTED] just past the Hall County line.

I approached the passenger side of the vehicle and the female passenger later identified as [REDACTED BY AGENCY] began opening the passenger door because the window didn’t work. I immediately noticed a strong odor of Marijuana emitting from inside the car as I began explaining the reason for the stop.

While obtaining driver’s license info from the male driver identified as Karl Kristopher Kmeck Showen, I radioed to request another deputy to my stop location. I asked both occupants when they or someone else had smoked Marijuana in the vehicle Karl replied “I don’t smoke weed sir” and “I don’t have anything.”

[REDACTED BY AGENCY] was asked out of the vehicle and escorted back to my patrol vehicle. I then asked Karl out of the vehicle and a pat search for weapons was conducted. I noticed a large bulge in his left pocket and asked if Karl minded if I removed the item to place it in his driver’s seat, to which he agreed.

I removed a large sum of currency from his pocket placing it on the driver’s seat of the vehicle before escorting him back to my patrol vehicle also. After a few moments, Dep Chapman arrived on scene and I asked him to begin a probable cause search of the vehicle as I was conducting GCIC/NCIC checks on the vehicle and both occupants.

I observed Dep Chapman remove a large bag of Marijuana from inside the vehicle and both occupants were detained in handcuffs behind their back. While continuing his search the following items were located and turned over to me.

  1. Taurus G3x 9mm handgun (Serial #ADH546429)
  2. Glock 42 .380 handgun (Serial #ADWU123)
  3. Two pistol magazines
  4. One digital scale coated with a green leafy substance
  5. Two black cell phones
  6. Four packages of Marijuana
  7. Two bags of Psilocybin mushrooms
  8. One open container of Promethazine Syrup
  9. Various boxes of concentrated THC Oil cartridges (50 individual cartridges)
  10. Large individual rubber-banded stack of US currency ($8,940 total)

I contacted DTF Agent D. Moulder and advised him of the stop, evidence located, and charges. Agent Moulder advised to secure all evidence in a temporary evidence locker for the drug task force to take over the next day as well as charges. Karl stated all of the items located in the vehicle belonged to him and he was placed under arrest.

[REDACTED BY AGENCY] grandmother who was also the registered owner of the vehicle was contacted and requested to have the vehicle turned over to [REDACTED BY AGENCY]. All of the evidence located was secured inside the backpack it was located in then secured in the rear hatch of my patrol vehicle.

I transported Karl to the Habersham County Detention Center where he was turned over to jail staff without incident. A back seat check was conducted before and after transport revealing no illegal contraband.

Myself and Dep Chapman took all evidence to the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office where a cash count was conducted for the $8,940 located inside the backpack with the narcotics and the digital scale. All items were logged in evidence and secured in a temporary evidence locker to be turned over to Agent Moulder. Charges are pending at the request of Agent Moulder until he can follow up on the investigation tomorrow.
