HOUSTON COUNTY, Ga. – A man previously convicted of murder in the fatal shooting of a nightclub security guard in 2019 has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge ahead of his re-trial.

Morgan Baker, who had originally been found guilty in 2022 for the shooting death of Tamarco Head outside Club Boss, entered a negotiated guilty plea for voluntary manslaughter, according to Houston County prosecutors. Baker was sentenced to 20 years, with 15 years to serve in prison and five years on probation.

The shooting occurred around 2 a.m. on July 6, 2019, outside Club Boss on North Davis Drive. That night, Alabama rapper NoCap performed at the venue, and Baker, a member of his entourage, was involved in an altercation with security after the performance.

Prosecutors say Baker and another unidentified person left the confrontation, retrieved firearms from a nearby Sprinter van, and fired toward the entrance of the club. A bullet struck Head, a security guard, killing him.

Baker was convicted of malice murder in 2022 and sentenced to life in prison. However, the Georgia Supreme Court overturned his conviction last year, ruling that jurors should not have been shown a 33-second clip from the music video for “Ghetto Angels,” which depicted Baker holding a semi-automatic pistol with an extended magazine. The court determined that the video was not relevant to the shooting and may have improperly influenced the jury.

Rather than face a new trial, Baker opted to plead guilty to voluntary manslaughter.

Houston County District Attorney Eric Z. Edwards called the case “a stark reminder of the unjustifiable violence that too often follows disputes in nightlife settings.”

“Morgan Baker escalated a minor altercation into deadly gunfire, costing Tamarco Head his life and devastating his loved ones,” Edwards said. “While the Georgia Supreme Court overturned Baker’s original conviction on evidentiary grounds, the facts of this case remained clear: he played a direct role in an act of senseless violence that led to a man’s death.”

Baker’s co-defendant has not been publicly identified, and the case remains active.
