On February 27, 2025 at approximately 0945 hours I, Deputy Farris was on duty for the Houston County Sheriff’s Department assigned to Perry High School as the School Resource Officer (SRO). I was wearing the uniform of the day with my badge clearly displayed on my chest. I was informed by Assistant Principal [WITNESS #1] of an Anonymous tip from the app the Houston County School District uses called Anonymous Alert. This app allows students to report things to the administration of the school. Mrs. [WITNESS #1] advised me that there were several students named in the tip, but it centered on contraband being used in a car belonging to Zane Hathaway. I confirmed Zane did have a parking permit assigned to him (436).
I rode out to the student parking lot to spot 436, I located a white in color 2006 Chrysler 300 with the parking permit of 436 displayed on the rear view window. I stood outside the Chrysler and could see clearly in the windows. In plain view I saw in the left rear passenger floor board packaging for an electronic vape device partially visible. I photographed the packaging and could read the wording “Blue Dream + White Widow”, “Sativa” and “Indica”. Sativa and Indica are words referring to cannabis. A quick google search of those words I located an identical box for an electronic vape from “Stoner Blend” “3 flavors in 1” “Flying Horse”.
I also saw sitting in a pocket of the center console was piece of packaging I recognized from the QR code on it. The packaging is a “RAZ” sticker that is packaged in the box for a RAZ nicotine electronic vape. In the ashtray was more packaging from electronic vapes in the form of little clear in color t-shaped rubber stoppers that are inserted in the mouth piece of RAZ vapes when manufactured. In the passenger rear floor board appeared to be a trash container, on top of the trash was a box for a RAZ LTX vape “Black Cherry Peach” flavor.
I sent the photographs to the Admin / SRO group text to make them aware of what I observed in plain sight. Mr. [WITNESS #2] responded he was going to get Zane from class and bring him to his office. I sat with the Chrysler until Mr. [WITNESS #2] advised me he had Zane in the office. Once Mr. [WITNESS #2] and Mrs. [WITNESS #1] got done conducting their administrative duties, they advised me we would be going to the Chrysler. I drove my marked unit back to parking spot 436 and waited for them.
Upon Mr. [WITNESS #2] and Mrs. [WITNESS #1] arrival to the parking spot, I activated my in car camera and body camera. Zane unlocked the Chrysler for them, they began searching the Chrysler. Mr. [WITNESS #2] looked at me then showed me what appeared to be a black in color Glock semi-automatic handgun in a leather belt worn holster. I secured the weapon from Mr. [WITNESS #2] then went to clear it safe when I realized it a Ball Bullet (BB) gun. Mr. [WITNESS #2] also pulled a large black in color fixed blade knife in a black in color sheath. Mr. [WITNESS #2] then located a blue in color vape with some cartoon like decorations, I immediately seen the clear cartilage and recognized it as a possible vape that contained tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). The vape device matched the packing I saw in the left rear floor board. There was four other nicotine vapes located in the Chrysler. Mr. [WITNESS #2] located a plastic bag containing five (5) Twisted Tea alcoholic beverages. One (1) of the five were opened and consumed at an unknown date and time.
Mr. [WITNESS #2] and Ms. [WITNESS #1] walked Zane back to Mr. [WITNESS #2] office. I notified Sgt. Weldon and Cpl. Lawrence about the incident. I took custody of all the items from the Chrysler and met with Mr. [WITNESS #2], Mrs. [WITNESS #1] and Zane in Mr. [WITNESS #2] office. I photographed all the evidence in Mr. [WITNESS #2]’s office.
Mr. [WITNESS #2] and Mrs. [WITNESS #1] had Zane write his written statement about the items. While Zane was writing his statement, Cpl. Lawrence arrived. I met with him in the SRO office and began the arrest and booking paperwork. We discussed the charges, Cpl. Lawrence advised to charge the BB gun as a weapon in school safety zone as well as the knife.
I completed the booking sheet, Zane is charged with two (2) counts of possession of a weapon within a school zone, one (1) count of possession of alcoholic beverages under the age of 21 and one (1) count of possession of an electronic smoking device (vape).
I returned to Mr. [WITNESS #2]’s office and asked Mr. [WITNESS #2] if they were done with Zane, he stated yes. I advised Zane at this time he was under arrest for the offenses of: two (2) counts of possession of a weapon within a school zone, one (1) count of possession of alcoholic beverages under the age of 21 and one (1) count of possession of an electronic smoking device (vape).
I asked Zane to remove all his jewelry and empty all his pockets on the table in front of him. Once he did, I advised him he was going to be transported to the Houston County Detention Center and that before I take him past the guard line, I needed to know was he concealing anything on his person that the administration did not find. I advised him he would be getting searched by me as well as x-rayed by a machine. Zane stated, yes. Zane advised me in front of Mr. [WITNESS #2] and Mrs. [WITNESS #1] that he had a vape. He reached into his front left side coin pocket and pulled out a red in color Raz “Black Cherry Peach” vape.
I then had Zane place his hands on Mr. [WITNESS #2]’s closet door with his legs spread wide. I explained I was going to be searching his person and it would be very close and intimate. He stated he understood. I conducted a search of his person and located no other contraband. I then placed Zane in double locking handcuffs on his wrist behind his back. I checked the handcuffs for proper fit and double lock.
I walked Zane out the office to the rear exit, where I placed him in the rear of my SRO Unit and buckled him with his seatbelt. I transported Zane to the Houston County Detention Center without incident. Zane was accepted and turned over to the Detention Center.
All evidence will be turned into the Houston County Sheriff’s Office evidence lockers, photographs, student profile and statement will be attached to this report.
Warrant will be taken later.
