On July 26th, 2025, I responded to a MVC on US 441 @ HWY 59. On arrival, a witness stated the at fault driver, SANQUEZ HOWARD, fled the scene on foot behind the Dollar General store.
I assessed the victims involved in the crash and asked for K-9 assistance from Banks County. Officer Boyer and Officer Echols arrived and assisted me, then set up a perimeter. I began investigating the crash while Commerce Officers and Banks County Units attempted to locate HOWARD.
My investigation and interviews with a witness and the driver of vehicle 2, determined the following:
HOWARD was driving a black 2012 Ford Taurus. He was northbound on US 441 and then entered the right turn lane for Hwy 59. [VICTIM #1] was driving a 2010 white Ford Fusion and was making the left turn from US 441 SB onto Hwy 59. HOWARD then re-entered the intersection from the turn lane at a high rate to continue NB on US 441, striking the Ford Fusion and sending it into a clockwise spin, coming to rest on Hwy 59. HOWARD continued through the intersection and stopped on the shoulder due to the extensive damage to his vehicle. He then ran on foot in the direction of the Dollar General.
Howard was located by Commerce Officers and Banks County Deputies behind the Dollar General hiding in the brush. He failed to obey commands from officers and struggled while they attempted to take him into custody. He also resisted attempts to be secured in a patrol vehicle and had to be drive stunned by Banks County Deputies in order to get him in the vehicle.
I had searched HOWARD’s vehicle to locate identifying information during my investigation. While in the vehicle, I noted the odor of an alcoholic beverage and that there was an open container, a MONSTER brew, mostly empty. When HOWARD was taken into custody, he had the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his person and breath. I read the Implied consent notice and requested blood and/or breath. HOWARD agreed.
I completed citations for DUI, Hit and Run, Reckless Driving, FTML and Open Container. Officer BOYER transported HOWARD to the Jackson County Jail. BOYER conducted the breath test on the intox 9000. HOWARD registered a .154 and .172. He was issued a DDS 1205.
Both occupants of vehicle 2 were transported to Athens by ambulance for complaints. Both vehicles were recovered by Seymores.
