I, Sgt Walker, was dispatched to [4100 BLOCK] Upper River Rd in reference to a welfare check concerning an individual who was later identified as Brian Ross.

Upon arrival, I made contact with [REDACTED BY AGENCY] which is the daughter of Brian. [REDACTED BY AGENCY] stated that she informed her father that she was not going to do those bad things to her that he has been doing anymore. With my training and experience, observing [REDACTED BY AGENCY] demeanor, I knew that she was referring to something sexual.

[REDACTED BY AGENCY] informed me that her father walked off into the woods and stated that he was going to kill himself in fear of her exposing the truth about the inappropriate sexual activity. Meanwhile, [WITNESS #1] and his wife arrived on scene because Brian stated that he was in his back yard about to commit suicide. I secured the two siblings in the reverend’s car with his wife and walked with the reverend to the side of the house to get a visual of the back yard where Brian was.

I immediately observed Mr. Ross, visibly distraught, on his knees, apologizing for his actions. He had a black firearm in his right hand and he was kneeling down. I approached the backyard fence while maintaining officer safety and initiated verbal contact. Mr. Ross mentioned that he felt hopeless and wanted to end his life because he messed up. He appeared to be emotional, and very agitated. Ross stated that there was no forgiveness for what he did. Ross instructed me several times to take his kids to another location because he did not want them to hear the gunshot.

I utilized verbal de-escalation and crisis intervention techniques speaking calmly, maintaining a nonthreatening posture, and encouraging Mr. Ross to express his feelings. I assured him he was not in trouble and emphasized that help was available. I instructed Deputy Langston who was on scene with me to retrieve my less-lethal shot gun. I was going to attempt to use the less lethal force in an attempt to prevent Brian from harming himself.

After several minutes of continued dialogue, Mr. Ross placed the firearm on the ground and walked towards Deputy Langston and I with his hands up, and agreed not to harm himself. Ross was detained for his safety and our and read Miranda, and placed into my back seat. Ross stated that he will not speak to me. I contacted EMS for further evaluation.

I asked [REDACTED BY AGENCY] more about what happen and she stated that when she wanted to go somewhere like the Homecoming dance Mr. Ross will say to her that she had to “convince him” to let her go. This was a recurring act that she had to do If she wanted to go out with friends or something extra curricular. I asked [REDACTED BY AGENCY] to explain what she met by “convince” Mr. Ross and she began to cry and state that she did not want to talk about it.

Mr. Ross was transported by ambulance to the hospital for assessment and treatment. No injuries were reported. No force was used. Mr. Ross was safely transported for medical evaluation following successful verbal intervention. A follow-up investigation. The 9mm firearm that Mr. Ross Had in his possession was placed into the Jones County Evidence lockers, along with his cell phone.
