On 03/30/2022 at 1408 hrs, I was dispatched to [900 BLOCK] Highland Dr in reference to a disturbance call. The complainant advised that a young woman ran from a male subject who was in possession of a firearm.

S/cpl Kunda #139 and ofc Bethea arrived on scene to assist.

Upon arrival I spoke with [VICTIM #1] (complainant/victim). Ms [VICTIM #1] was in the passenger seat of a pick-up truck with her two daughters [REDACTED BY AGENCY] (dob [REDACTED]) and [REDACTED BY AGENCY] (dob [REDACTED]) in front of [900 BLOCK] Highland Dr. Ms [VICTIM #1] advised she had a verbal dispute with [REDACTED BY AGENCY] father Michael Cansler (suspect) while inside their residence at [900 BLOCK] Highland Dr before it turned physical.

She said the verbal dispute was over Mr Cansler wanting to go out and celebrate a friend’s birthday. Ms [VICTIM #1] asked Mr Cansler to help with the children before he left but he did not want to help. Ms [VICTIM #1] stated this made her upset and they started to argue. She advised during the argument Mr Cansler head butted her several times in the head. Ms [VICTIM #1] said she punched a glass clock which broke and caused a laceration to her hand. She said that caused Mr Cansler to yell even more so she grabbed both of her kids and walked out of the residence. She stated Mr Cansler followed after her and punched her with a closed fist which also struck [REDACTED BY AGENCY] (infant) on the head. This caused her and both girls to fall on the ground. Ms [VICTIM #1] said two women who were doing yard work across the street assisted her by picking up [REDACTED BY AGENCY] and placing them in the truck. Ms [VICTIM #1] said one of the women told Mr Cansler to calm down because he was still acting erratic.

I spoke to [WITNESS #1] (witness) who stated she and [WITNESS #2] (witness) were landscaping at [900 BLOCK] Highland Dr when they heard a woman screaming. They observed Mr Cansler punch Ms [VICTIM #1] who was carrying her 4 month old child which caused her to fall on the ground with both children. Mrs [WITNESS #1] stated her and Mrs [WITNESS #2] picked up the children and placed them in their vehicle until police arrived.

Ems arrived on scene and evaluated Ms [VICTIM #1] and her daughters. Ms [VICTIM #1] declined transportation to the hospital for her and her children.

S/cpl Kunda spoke with Mr Cansler who stood in the doorway to the residence. Mr Cansler was irate and yelling that he was not going to go anywhere. Due to Mr Cansler possibly being in possession of a firearm, officers did not approach the residence. Mr Cansler kept yelling saying that he did not do anything and all we wanted to do was send him back to prison. Mr Cansler’s mother [REDACTED] arrived on scene, she was able to talk Mr Cansler into exiting the residence and meeting with s/cpl Kunda and ofc Bethea.

Mr Cansler was placed under arrest (handcuffed, checked for fit and double locked) for simple battery (FVA). Mr Cansler was upset about going back to jail so he began to pull away from officers. Officers placed Mr Cansler against the front of scpl Kunda’s vehicle (2017 ford explorer, black/white vehicle #71) to gain control of him at which point he started striking the hood of the vehicle with his forehead which caused a dent in the hood.

Mr Cansler was placed in my patrol vehicle and he was transported (checked the backseat of my patrol vehicle before and after transport) and released to the Liberty county jail. During the transport Mr Cansler struck the back seat cage numerous times with his forehead which caused a visible injury to his forehead. While at the jail the nurse attempted to clean Mr Cansler’s injury but he would not let them. The nurse observed the injury from a distance and advised that it was superficial and that Mr canlser was okay to be admitted into the jail.

Officers with the department of community supervision along with officer from the Hinesville police department conducted a 4th amendment waiver search of Mr Cansler’s residence to look for the firearm but was unable to locate it.

Ms [VICTIM #1] gathered her children and left the residence with a friend without further incident.
