On Sunday, March 14th, 2022 at approximately 2250 hours, Deputy Martin called me to tell me he was at the jail and was witnessing street racing or what he believed to be 2 or 3 cars on the air strip behind the Liberty County Jail. I left my location at the Parker’s on GA 38 and Talmadge Rd.
As I was coming up Dorsey Rd. I observed a red sedan turn left on to Dorsey Rd headed towards Hardman Rd. A second white sedan pulled out behind him. A short second later, a car failed to stop and crossed over Dorsey Rd at a very high rate of speed. Deputy Martin had activated his blue lights and attempted to stop the third car.
I activated my body worn camera, initiated a traffic stop, and activated my emergency equipment. I caught up to the red sedan and the white sedan and verbally gave commands for the white car to pull over. He complied and parked the car. I caught up to the red car a few hundred yards up the road and he pulled to the right shoulder.
I approached the driver and asked him for his driver’s license. He asked me why I was stopping him and I informed him it was for street racing on the private air strip behind the jail. Again, I ordered him to give me his driver’s license. He stated he was not on the air strip racing. He provided me with a New York driver’s license and I identified him as Jonathan Cox.
Cox stated he was not racing on the strip. He told me he pulled up to the no trespassing sign on the air strip, turned around and came back. I asked him who the other people were he came out of the drive way with and he stated he didn’t know them at all. Cox stated they were out there (the air strip racing) he just happened to be there. I informed Cox a deputy witness him racing on the strip and he continued to deny it. Cox asked for a supervisor and I requested LT Barnes via Central.
I retuned to my Mobile Data Terminal and conducted a GCIC/NCIC check of his NY driver’s license and it returned his license was valid but he had a warrant for his arrest through Hinesville Police Department. I requested Central go ahead and send the hit and re approached the car. I asked Cox to exit the vehicle so I could talk to him about the incident and the warrant. Cox informed me it was impossible for him to have a Warrant for his arrest. He went on to protest the investigation. His agitation levels continued to increase so I placed him in double locked handcuffs and checked them for fit. I searched his person for contraband and found none. I told Cox to sit on my bumper to avoid falling and hurting himself and he complied. Several times he stated he was a Police Officer with the New York Police Department.
While waiting for LT Barnes to arrive on scene I used my tint meter to check the front window of the Red Ford sedan. It showed the tint to be at 17%.
LT Barnes arrived on scene and made contact with Cox. He informed him he was under arrest for street racing and he had a valid warrant for his arrest from HPD. He explained his car would be impounded for street racing. LT Barnes secured him in the back seat of his patrol car and informed me his back seat had been cleared of contraband prior.
Walthourville PD Officer Adams approached the traffic stop and informed me the other car I’d stopped had issues with insurance, registration, and other things. I moved over to the other vehicle and used my MDT to conduct a check of the driver’s license and displayed registration. It returned the driver was Chaudrius Hardy and he was wanted by HPD, he had no valid insurance on the vehicle, and the registration was expired.
I requested Central send the hit. I approached Hardy and asked him to exit the vehicle. I asked Hardy who the other person in the red car was and he stated his brother. He went on to explain the driver of the red car, Cox, was the one who brought him out to the air strip and stated they were racing to tune their cars. I informed him he was under arrest for street racing and he stated he understood. I also told him he had a warrant for his arrest from HPD. Officer Adams placed Hardy in double locked handcuffs and checked them for fit. He searched his person for contraband and found none. Hardy stated he did not know the other car that was on the air strip with them, they had just met up with him and were racing on the strip with them.
Officer Adams stated he attempted to validate the insurance and registration on the vehicle. He went on to explain when they called the insurance company they were unable to find any active policy on the vehicle for Hardy.
Officer Adams secured him in the back seat of his patrol car and transported him to the Liberty County Jail. He turned over all custody and property to the Booking department.
Kevin’s Towing arrived on scene and took possession of Hardy’s White Volkswagen and Cox Red Ford. Clark’s towing arrived on scene around the same time and removed Bacon’s Dodge Charger.
Deputy Martin was out with the third vehicle driven by Jamerius Bacon. Deputy Martin informed me Bacon admitted to street racing with the other two cars on the air strip. He also had a passenger participating and spectating, Samyra Scott.
I met LT Barnes and Deputy Martin at the Liberty County Jail in the Sally Port. I pulled Bacon aside and read him his Miranda Rights. He stated he understood his rights as they were read to him and he was okay to talk to me. I asked him what he was doing and he stated he was street racing on the air strip with the other two vehicles on scene. I asked him where he knew the people from and he stated he just met them while he was out driving. Bacon went on to explained they participated in drag racing up and down the strip for 3 or 4 passes before they attempted to leave when Deputy Martin arrived.
Bacon and Scott were turned over to the booking department.
Cox was issued a citation for window tint violation, and reckless stunt driving. Hardy was issued citations for No proof of insurance, no tag, and reckless stunt driving. Bacon was issued a citation for reckless stunt driving and Scott was issued a citation for street racing.
