Vehicle 2, which was towing a trailer, was decelerating in the number 1 Southbound Lane of West Oglethorpe Highway at the intersection with the driveway of 735 West Oglethorpe Highway (Lowe’s) when it struck vehicle 1 from behind. Vehicle 1 was traveling in the number 2 Southbound Lane of West Oglethorpe Highway when it suddenly changed lanes to the number 1 Southbound Lane and decelerated which caused vehicle 2 to strike it from behind. Vehicle 1 fled the scene after the collision.

Driver 2 said he was traveling in the number 1 Southbound Lane of West Oglethorpe Highway at around 30 mph and he was decelerating. He said he was “about two car lengths” behind an unknown vehicle as the traffic slowed when vehicle 1 suddenly changed lanes from the number 2 Southbound Lane to the number 1 Southbound Lane in front of his vehicle. He said vehicle 1 was also decelerating and he applied the brakes but he could not avoid the collision with vehicle 1.

After the collision, he said driver 1 exited from vehicle 1 and there was a brief verbal exchange. He said driver 1 re-entered vehicle 1 and fled the scene. He described driver 1 as a black male about 18 to 21 years of age with shoulder-length dreads and wearing gray sweatpants. He said there was also a pregnant female passenger in vehicle 1. He provided a partial Georgia Tag for vehicle 1 starting with “[REDACTED]” and said it had damage to the rear and the trunk.

A short time later, Scpl Roberts #156 advised he was following a white Tesla sedan with damage to the rear and the trunk with the Georgia Tag of [REDACTED] that was traveling eastbound on EG Miles Parkway. He initiated a traffic stop on this vehicle and verified with the driver that he had just been involved in a collision. He said he had knowledge that he had warrants for his arrest and that is why he fled the scene.

A check by name and date of birth allowed Scpl Roberts to confirm driver 1’s identity and the GCIC return showed he had warrants for his arrest from Liberty County Sheriff’s Office and that his Georgia driver’s license was suspended for failure to appear (violation date 12/26/2024, suspension date 05/13/2025).

Driver 1 was detained pending confirmation of the warrants and the desk officer advised Liberty County verified the warrants and placed a hold. During a search incident to arrest, a small plastic baggie containing a green, leafy substance suspected to be marijuana was found in driver 1’s front right pocket. Scpl Roberts took possession of the marijuana and later turned it over to me.

Cpl Joseph #140 arrived on scene and he advised driver 1 of his miranda rights before asking him what happened during the crash. Cpl Joseph said driver 1 invoked his rights and declined to provide a statement. A driver’s history check of driver 1 showed no previous arrest with convictions for driving on a suspended license.

Investigation revealed that driver 1 was driving on a suspended license, made an improper lane change and fled the scene of a collision involving an occupied vehicle as per Georgia codes 40-5-121(a), 40-6-48(1) and 40-6-270 and possessed a misdemeanor amount of marijuana as per Hinesville City ordinance 12-134.

Cpl Joseph transported driver 1 to Liberty County Jail and released him into the jail’s custody. The arrest and transport followed department protocol (placed in double-locked handcuffs which were checked for fit, searched for weapons or contraband with no weapons found and seat belted in the rear seat of Cpl Joseph’s patrol vehicle for transport). The back seat was searched before and after transport with no contraband found.
