On May the 31st, I was dispatched to a burglary that had just occurred at the antique store in Carlton. Dispatch advised the suspect fled in a small white car with front end damage towards Elberton.
An off duty firefighter called in and said that he saw the car and was following it. Because it was dragging its front bumper and driving erratically, the fireman assumed it had been involved in an accident and called in to dispatch to see if a wreck had been reported in the area. Dispatch told the fireman they just received a burglary call involving the same white car and asked the fireman to keep it in sight until we arrived. Dispatch kept me updated while en route to Carlton, and I was able to locate the car at the cemetery in Carlton.
I responded to the cemetery and found a white Chevy Volt parked behind the granite chapel. It was missing the whole front bumper and there were car parts scattered across the cemetery. The car was unoccupied and my radio wasn’t getting out so I had dispatch put the fireman through to my cell phone. The fireman said the suspect was a short, thin, white male, and that he was in the woods walking towards Carlton. The fireman then said he was in a white truck leaving a driveway next to the cemetery.
I got back in my patrol car and went to the driveway next to the cemetery and made contact with a white truck pulling out. I blocked the truck and approached the truck. A heavy set white male was driving the truck, but the passenger was a short, thin, and younger white male. I approached the passenger side and got the passenger out.
I identified the passenger by his license as Camden Michaud of Elberton. I asked the passenger where he came from and he stammered to think of an answer. I asked the driver where they were going and the driver said that he lives here. He said he was inside watching TV when the passenger knocked on his door, told him he had been in a wreck, and asked him for a ride to Elberton.
I could smell the odor of beer coming from the suspect and asked if that was his car at the cemetery, he said yes. I asked if he had been drinking today and he said yes. I asked where he came from and he said the antique store in Carlton.
I placed the suspect under arrest, read him Miranda, and implied consent for DUI. Michaud agreed to answer my questions and agreed to a blood test. The suspect admitted to entering the antique store and stealing several items. I asked where the items were so that I could return them to the store owner. He said he hid the items in the bushes behind the store. Deputy Self transported the suspect to the store and retrieved the stolen items taken during the burglary. The items were costume hats and jackets, a hammer, and an antique tomahawk which were returned to the victim.
The owner [VICTIM #1] said that he was in his building and saw the suspect inside his business next door. [VICTIM #1] said that his business was closed and went to investigate. He saw the suspect in the building and that he was walking out with an armload of clothing and hats. [VICTIM #1] ran around the building to the suspect’s car and confronted him, but the suspect drove off. [VICTIM #1] said that the suspect entered his business through a locked back door and that the door was damaged as he forced it open.
The driver drove his car down the side of the post office building and then struck [VICTIM #1]’s car. [VICTIM #1] said that the suspect turned left out of the Carlton Post Office and headed towards Lexington Road which is where the fireman saw the car and called in about it.
Another witness on scene, who identified herself as the [WITNESS #1], saw the accident and corroborated the victim’s story. [VICTIM #1] told me that when he confronted the suspect next to the Post Office, the suspect threatened to return and burn down his business, and the building that he lives in. [VICTIM #1] wanted the suspect barred for 2 years.
On the way to the jail, the suspect admitted to jumping the fence, kicking in the door, and stealing the items from the store. He called himself an idiot repeatedly on the way to the jail.
There wasn’t a supervisor available for a blood test at station 1, so I transported the suspect to the jail where he blew a 0.124 on the Intox 9000.
The suspect was cited, served a notice of prohibited entry for 5775 HWY 72 E, and turned over to jailers.
Due to already having the suspect in handcuffs, he was not given SFST because he was a flight risk and had fled the scene prior. The vehicle was removed from the scene by Madison County Towing as well.
Warrants will be obtained in this matter.
