MONROE COUNTY, Ga. – A man from Monroe County, Georgia, is facing multiple charges after allegedly stealing over 2,400 gallons of gasoline from a local station. The theft was reported to authorities on January 20, following a discovery made by the station owner that between January 19 and 20, a substantial amount of fuel had been taken without payment.
Deputies quickly launched an investigation, which led them to two vehicles believed to be involved in the crime: a gray SUV and a U-Haul truck. Surveillance cameras at the gas station provided helpful images of both vehicles, which were seen near the station during off-hours. These vehicles were key to identifying the suspects.
Thanks to the Flock camera system, a tool that helps law enforcement track vehicles across various locations, the authorities were able to pinpoint the movements of the suspects.
Just days later, on January 23, a Monroe County deputy spotted a U-Haul truck that matched the description of one involved in the theft. The vehicle was pulled over around midnight, and when deputies approached the truck, they immediately noticed a strong odor of gasoline emanating from inside.
Upon searching the U-Haul, officers discovered two large plastic tanks—each capable of holding 250 gallons of fuel. Both tanks were nearly empty, strongly suggesting they had been used to transport the stolen gasoline.
As a result, authorities arrested 27-year-old Lionel Jones, who was charged with theft by taking, criminal attempt to commit a felony, and possession of less than an ounce of marijuana. Jones was arrested and transported to the Monroe County Jail.
