On the above date and time I responded to the MAPCO Convenient Store at 6305 Hwy 225 N. in reference to shoplifting.
Upon my arrival I made contact with the clerk ([WITNESS #1]) inside the store who asked me to search two female subjects purse’s that was standing at the counter. I noticed the first female in line who was later identified as Cynthia Hawkins who did not have anything in her hands. I noticed the second female who was also identified later as Jannie McMillin was holding (1) pack of white powdered donuts.
The clerk immediately asked both individuals if they were going to pay for the items that they put inside their purse. Ms. Hawkins immediately stated that she did not put any items in her purse. The clerk then asked Ms. Hawkins about the items that she had hid underneath her jacket. The clerk stated to Ms. Hawkins and Ms. McMillin that she saw them both hiding items and putting items in their purse.
Ms. Hawkins stated that she had (2) packs of Reese’s peanut butter cups in her hand as she was scratching her back underneath her jacket but stated that she was not stealing the Reese’s. I asked Ms. Hawkins what she did with the items that she had in her hand. Ms. Hawkins stated that she put the items back on the shelf where she got them because she did not have enough money to pay for them.
I then asked Ms. McMillin if she had anything in her purse and she stated yes, Ms. McMillin stated that she was going to pay for the items. Ms. McMillin removed (1) 16 .oz can of Monster Energy drink and (1) 2.25 .oz bag of Boom Chicka popcorn and set them on the counter with the pack of doughnuts that she had in her hand.
After speaking with Ms. Hawkins and Ms. McMillin they both began to apologize to the clerk stating that they knew better to not be stealing. I was then advised by the clerk that her supervisor (Store Manager) [REDACTED] was about to arrive at the store and would advise me if she wanted Ms. Hawkins and Ms. McMillin charged or just trespassed from the property.
Upon Ms. [REDACTED]’s arrival she advised me that she wanted both individuals Ms. Hawkins and Ms. McMillin charged with shoplifting and trespassed from MAPCO property at 6305 Hwy 225 N. Chatsworth GA. 30705 and to not return back to the property/store. I then placed Ms. Hawkins and Ms. McMillin under arrest and if they had anything illegal inside their purse and they both stated no. I did look inside their purses and did not see anything right off that stood out to be illegal or more stolen items from the store.
I then placed both Ms. Hawkins and Ms. McMillin under arrest and placed them in the back seat of my patrol unit. Due to Ms. Hawkins vehicle being parked outside the store Ms. [REDACTED] (Store Manager) wished for the car, a blue 2006 Mazda 3 be towed off the premises. I then requested list (Babb’s Wrecker) to be en route. The vehicle was turned over to Babb’s upon their arrival and I transported both females to the Murray County Jail without incident.
While Detention Officer Bobby Johnson was intaking Ms. McMillin and searching her purse, Detention Officer Johnson located a clear and purple plastic container that had a white crystal substance inside it. Detention Officer Johnson immediately advised me of the findings and I field tested the substance and it field tested positive to be methamphetamine.
Both Ms. Hawkins and Ms. McMillin were charged with theft by shoplifting and Ms. McMillin got additional charges for being in possession of a controlled substance and bringing a controlled substance across the guard lines of the Murray County Jail.
Nothing further to report at this time.
