Warning: The following story contains information regarding alleged physical violence against children.

MUSCOGEE COUNTY, Ga. – A 15-year-old boy was shot and killed on Thursday, September 19, 2024, as he exited a school bus at a bus stop on Watkins Drive. Later that day, authorities arrested 20-year-old Roannil Clanton on Third Avenue and charged him with the murder of Earkavion Lee as well as six counts of aggravated assault for firing a weapon in a crowd of people.

Earkavion was a ninth-grade student at Kendrick High School. His brother, Earkus Porter, was also fatally shot at an area park in February.

Clanton’s arrest involved a multi-agency effort, including the Columbus Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, and the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office.

Police said Thursday’s incident occurred at approximately 4:30 PM, and Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan pronounced Earkavion deceased at 5:15 PM.

Following the shooting, the school district stated, “The Muscogee County School District mourns the tragic loss of one of our students, Earkavion Lee, a 9th-grade student at Kendrick High School, as a result of senseless gun violence. Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, and the entire school community during this incredibly difficult time.

The safety and well-being of our students are always our top priorities. We are confident that the Columbus Police Department will continue its thorough investigation into this matter.” The district emphasized the availability of their crisis intervention team and school counselors for students, staff, and parents in need of emotional support.

Columbus Mayor Skip Henderson said, “There’s something extra wrong about this. This kid was getting off the school bus where he was supposed to be safe. It’s a gut punch anytime a violent crime takes place, particularly when somebody loses their life. It’s horrible.”

Mayor Henderson added, “It’s a senseless, senseless act. We’re going to keep working, and our law enforcement won’t rest to stop these kinds of things from happening.”

Clanton’s first court appearance was scheduled for 8:00 AM on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, at Recorder’s Court.

Officials are asking anyone with information regarding this active investigation to please contact Sergeant Nicholas at 706-225-4363.
