MUSCOGEE COUNTY, Ga. – Authorities have charged six minors regarding the drowning death of a 15-year-old boy, who was discovered floating in a retention pond on May 29, 2024. According to Columbus Police, Zahmere Greene had been deceased for almost a week before being found within a mile of the Chattahoochee River.
Initial findings determined his drowning occurred on May 23, 2024. No one reported the incident until six days later.
The South Columbus Public Library shared a social media post reflecting on Greene, describing him as “a joy” who loved visiting the library.
The library stated, “Today, we honor the life of one of our young patrons, Zahmere Greene. We have just learned of his tragic passing and are so saddened by this news.
Zahmere loved to come to the library and hang out with our staff. He was a joy to be around, always had a smile on his face, and he loved talking about his future career goals, although they changed every week.
It is with sad hearts that we send our condolences to his family and friends.”
Investigators said that half a dozen children ranging from ages 9 to 17 witnessed Greene’s death.
An 11-year-old child faces charges of involuntary manslaughter and concealing the death of another. The juvenile remains detained at the Regional Youth Detention Center.
On June 8, 2024, a 17-year-old male, Shane Sano, was charged with concealing the death of another and booked into the Muscogee County Jail.
Authorities charged four additional juveniles, ages nine, 11, 11, and 12, with concealing the death of another and then released them to their parents and guardians.
Police stated that this tragic incident should act as a reminder to parents and children about the necessity of the “See Something, Say Something” rule.
This case is pending in court.
