On Thursday June 11, 2026 at 1403 Hours, a 911 caller reported to the Covington-Newton 911 Center that a possibly impaired driver was operating on the roadways within Newton County. The caller followed the vehicle while on the phone with 911, reporting various offenses to include swerving in and out of lanes, swerving off the road, and speeding.
The Covington Police Department made contact with the vehicle after the driver stopped in the emergency lane on the side of I-20 Eastbound. When officers made contact with the driver, they smelled the odor of alcoholic beverage inside the vehicle. A deputy with the NCSO HEAT unit arrived and made contact with the driver and the CPD officers on scene. The driver was interviewed and asked to perform SFST. After SFST, a PBT was administered, showing a positive result for alcohol. The driver was arrested for DUI and read the Implied Consent Notice for Suspects Age 21 or Older, and he agreed to provide a breath sample. The driver was transported to the jail and the state-administered breath test was performed, providing a reading of 0.102% BrAC.
The driver was booked into the jail for DUI Per Se, Improper Stopping in the Emergency Lane, Defective Equipment, and Open Container. The vehicle was towed by rotation wrecker service K-2 Towing.
