On March 15, 2024, I responded to [2700 BLOCK] Greensboro Hwy in regard to a stolen vehicle report. Per dispatch, the caller advised that someone let him know that his vehicle was seen in Oglethorpe County. His vehicle was taken from the residence sometime the night prior.
Upon my arrival I made contact with the caller, Timothy Handley, who advised me the following: He normally leaves his vehicle parked in front of his residence and leaves the keys to it inside. He had not seen his vehicle since this morning, and he was adamant that last night he was alone. He had received a call from a friend advising him that the vehicle was seen in Oglethorpe County in a ditch. He did not call earlier because he was not sure of what number to call to make a report of his stolen vehicle.
Sgt. Dorsey had spoken with a supervisor from Oglethorpe County S.O. before our arrival. It was confirmed that the vehicle was involved in a wreck last night. A female subject was listed as a suspect who was possibly driving the vehicle. Initially, Handley stated he was uncertain of who had his vehicle or who may be a suspect. He further stated that no one was in the residence other than him when asked if he was alone. Sgt Dorsey asked Handley if he knew the female that may be a suspect.
Handley stated he knew of her, but nothing further. Sgt Dorsey then asked Handley if the female subject was inside the residence. Handley admitted that the female was inside. We walked over and Handley let us in. As soon as we walked in, we observed a female subject lying on a mattress. The female subject sat up, and extensive injuries to her face were visible. Her right eye was swollen shut, and the female complained of cuts in her mouth and pain in her jaw. Sgt Dorsey remained with the female and I asked Handley to speak with me outside.
Handley then began to explain that he had not seen his vehicle since last night. I asked him to elaborate and reminded him that he initially stated he had not seen his vehicle since this morning. He then began making comments regarding the female having been involved in a wreck with his vehicle. I pointed out to him that I had not mentioned that the female subject had been involved in a wreck.
Handley then began repeating that he normally leaves his keys in the vehicle. He then admitted knew the female had taken the vehicle to go to the store and possibly see some relatives. When he tried to call, she did not answer the phone. This morning he proceeded to go on about his business and worked in the field. Due to the inclement weather, he returned home early at approximately 1100 Hrs. When he returned home, he observed the female subject lying down, and he was made aware that the female subject had been involved in a wreck. He was unclear as to the whereabouts of his vehicle, but he knew she had it last and her use of it.
I confronted Handley and pointed out that he was reporting his vehicle stolen when he knew that it wasn’t. Handley admitted that he was made aware this morning that his vehicle was involved in the wreck, and he had no explanation as to why he alleged his truck was stolen.
I determined that Handley was lying and that he was attempting to make a false report of a crime. I arrested him (handcuffed, checked for fit, double locked) and escorted him to the back of my patrol vehicle. I then transported him to county jail and subsequently turned him over to a jail officer. I read him Miranda Warning, and he stated he understood his rights as I explained them to him. He admitted he screwed up by lying to me about his vehicle having been stolen. Warrants have been applied for and approved by Chief Clerk of Courts.
Oglethorpe County S.O. completed a wreck report regarding Handley’s vehicle, and they had it towed. (see Oglethorpe Case #2024-03-061)
