[NARRATIVE #1 on January 21, 2023]
On 01-21-23 and around 0400 hours, Rabun 911 dispatched the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office to [500 BLOCK] Hwy 76 East, Apt. [REDACTED], Clayton, GA, for a threats report. Dispatch was unable to give the sheriff’s any further information concerning the call.
When deputies arrived, Cpl. Cook made contact he victim, [VICTIM #1], and her parents, [REDACTED] and [REDACTED]. Before speaking to [VICTIM #1], Cpl. Cook noticed a “shank” (a small knife that was wrapped in a cloth) laying in the grass at the front porch to the residence.
Cpl. Cook asked about the shank and [REDACTED] advised that the shank was there as a result of the domestic that took place in the apartment. Cpl. Cook then entered the apartment and made contact with [VICTIM #1] to collect her verbal statement of the incident.
[VICTIM #1] advised that on the date, her boyfriend, Daequan Harrison, got fired from his job at Parkdale Mills, Rabun Gap, GA. [VICTIM #1] advised that she began to discuss what happened and Daequan became very distraught, became intoxicated by alcoholic beverages that he was drinking, and came up with the idea that he was going to go back to Parkdale Mills in order to stab his boss, only known as Don.
[VICTIM #1] advised that Daequan then went into the bedroom of the apartment, ripped one of his shirts up, took a strip of cloth from the shirt, wrapped it around the handle of a small kitchen knife (what appeared to be a cheese knife-SEE picture), and held it in his hands while stating that he wanted to go cut/stab his boss.
[VICTIM #1] stated that Daequan then asked [VICTIM #1] to drive him to Parkdale Hills so that he could commit the act. [VICTIM #1] stated that she told Daequan that she would not take him. As a result, Daequan got verbally upset, but ended up setting the knife on the coffee table in the living room area.
After setting the knife down, [VICTIM #1] stated that Daequan sat on the couch in the living room and began to calm down. It was described that Daequan was still consuming alcoholic beverages at the time. [VICTIM #1] advised that Daequan did not stay calm for long and began discussing things with her that cause the couple to argue.
Through the discussion, [VICTIM #1] stated that the two talked about financial obligations that the couple shared. [VICTIM #1] stated that she reminded Daequan that he owed her over $8,000.00 as a result of her paying for his things, and that he really needed to keep a job so that he could pay her back.
[VICTIM #1] advised that Daequan continued drinking during the conversation and was becoming more intoxicated by the alcoholic beverages while his anger began to build. [VICTIM #1] advised that the conversation became so verbally volatile that she decided to remove herself from the living room and withdraw into the bedroom.
[VICTIM #1] advised that Daequan soon proceeded into the bedroom behind her. While inside the bedroom, [VICTIM #1] stated that Daequan began speaking about wanting to inflict self-harm to himself.
[VICTIM #1] stated that Daequan started speaking about suicide and then he walked over to nightstand, that was next to the bed, opened the top nightstand drawer, drew out a pistol that was in a holster, retreated away from [VICTIM #1] to the other side of the room, and then began to threaten to shoot himself in the head with it.
[VICTIM #1] advised that she plead with Daequan not to do it and Daequan drew the pistol from the sheath, placed it to his head, put his index finger into the trigger guard, and placed his finger onto the trigger of the pistol. [VICTIM #1] stated that she grabbed the arm in which Daequan held the pistol and began to tell him to drop the pistol.
[VICTIM #1] stated that while she was trying to get Daequan to drop the pistol, Daequan pointed the gun behind him, where [VICTIM #1] was standing, and pointed the gun in her direction. [VICTIM #1] described that the gun was pointed at her face. [VICTIM #1] stated that Daequan told her to let go of him and [VICTIM #1] stated that she did.
[VICTIM #1] advised that when she let go of Daequan’s arm, Daequan withdrew the pistol from being pointed at her, placed the pistol back into the sheath, and laid the pistol on the bed. [VICTIM #1] stated that she immediately grabbed the pistol and held it tight to her body in order to keep it away from Daequan.
[VICTIM #1] described the situation where the gun was pointed at her face as a very frightening situation in which she did not know if Daequan was going to pull the trigger or not. Cpl. Cook asked [VICTIM #1] if Daequan said anything to her and [VICTIM #1] advised that all Daequan stated to her was to let him go.
Daequan was described to have walked away from the situation, momentarily, and then came back to where [VICTIM #1] was standing and began to argue with her again. [VICTIM #1] stated that Daequan then pulled the knife that he previously laid on the coffee table, held it up in her direction, and threatened to slit her throat with it.
[VICTIM #1] stated that she was not scared at this point because she knew that Daequan was all talk, thus she ignored him and walked back into the bedroom. Daequan then set the knife back down on the coffee table and waked into the bedroom.
[VICTIM #1] stated that she left Daequan in the bedroom, took the opportunity to respond to the living room and retrieved the knife, and then [VICTIM #1] threw the knife out the front door to eliminate it from the incident.
When [VICTIM #1] threw the knife outside, Daequan came towards her and tried to get the pistol from her so that he could throw it outside. [VICTIM #1] stated that she was able to protect the pistol and Daequan walked away again. [VICTIM #1] stated that Daequan then went outside on the porch and smoked a cigarette.
When Daequan came back inside, it was described that Daequan caught [VICTIM #1] off-guard and was able to get the pistol away from her. Daequan then began to walk towards the front door in order to throw the pistol out into the yard.
[VICTIM #1] then advised that she picked up her phone, told Daequan she was calling her mom, and then proceeded to dial her mom on the telephone. Daequan immediately walked back towards [VICTIM #1] and handed her pistol back to her. Daequan then walked back outside and stood on the porch.
[VICTIM #1] stated that Daequan stayed outside for a period of time while she spoke to her parents. Once [VICTIM #1] had her parents in route to help her, Daequan soon reemerged into the residence, went into the kitchen, pulled a large butcher type knife, wrapped a sock around the handle, and then went back outside while holding the knife. [VICTIM #1] stated that when her parents arrived on scene she asked Daequan to leave her residence.
Daequan then packed up his personal items, loaded some of the items into a broke down vehicle that he owned that was parked in the parking lot of the apartments, and walked away from the apartment, east on 76 East. [VICTIM #1] advised that at some point, while Daequan was collecting his personal items, he laid the large kitchen knife of the kitchen table.
Due to the domestic violence situation that Daequan created through his actions against [VICTIM #1], it was decided to go look for Daequan in order to place him under arrest. Sheriff’s Deputies, and Clayton police officers, searched he area in the direction to which Daequan walked, but Daequan was not located.
Cpl. Cook then went over domestic violence laws with [VICTIM #1] and the resources that were available to her as a victim of domestic violence. In order to confirm that the incident was in fact a domestic violence case, Cpl. Cook asked [VICTIM #1] how long Daequan had been living with her. [VICTIM #1] stated that Daequan moved in May of 2022.
[VICTIM #1] stated that she was dating Daequan before May and estimated that it had been close to eight and half months that they had been dating. When asked about past domestic violence situations that [VICTIM #1] and Daequan had been through, [VICTIM #1] advised that she and Daequan have argued quite a bit.
[VICTIM #1] did advise that Daequan has threatened to hurt her before, but that she had never received great bodily harm from Daequan before the date or report. [VICTIM #1] was given a domestic violence victims bill of rights card, a domestic violence victim’s compensation card, and a Faith Powerhouse card.
It was explained to [VICTIM #1] the process by which she could obtain a Temporary Protective Order and how to file for an eviction. It was explained that should [VICTIM #1] go through Faith; Faith would assist her with the paperwork for both.
Cpl. Cook asked [VICTIM #1] if she knew if Daequan suffered from any mental illness. [VICTIM #1] stated that she did not know if Daequan did or not, but that Daequan’s brother did suffer from schizophrenia. [VICTIM #1] did state that Daequan does have a substance abuse history as he drinks a lot, usually moonshine (described as 40-70 proof), on this date Apple Pie Moonshine (estimated at around 50-70 proof).
[VICTIM #1] stated that Daequan also smokes marijuana quite a bit, but has not had possession of marijuana in a few weeks, Cpl. Cook requested of [VICTIM #1] that she write a statement for the case file. [VICTIM #1] did as requested of her. While writing the statement for the case file, Daequan texted her and stated that he was going to turn himself in.
Daequan then texted that he never pointed the gun at [VICTIM #1]. Daequan then backed away from turning himself in and advised that he would give a verbal statement over the phone only. Daequan never returned to the scene to turn himself in while deputies were on scene.
Once the statement was completed by [VICTIM #1], it was suggested that she stay with her parents for the night in order to prevent a further altercation with Daequan. [VICTIM #1] agreed, collected some of her things, and left with her parents. Warrants will be sought in this case. Pictures were taken of the knives that were used in the incident.
