On Sunday, January 11th, 2026, at 8:30 PM, the Clayton Police responded to a report of an assault at the residence located at [SINGLE DIGIT BLOCK] East Pinecrest Drive.

Sergeant Andy Beck and Officer Sarah Chapman arrived and met a male identified as [VICTIM #1]. He reported that one of his roommates, Holden Rodriguez, had assaulted him with a firearm. [VICTIM #1] explained that Rodriguez became angry because a dog had been left in a pen for most of the day. Since [VICTIM #1] did not own the dog, he did not feel responsible for its care.

[VICTIM #1] stated that he had moved to the area from Asheville, with the understanding that Rodriguez would help him earn money and fix his car, which had transmission issues. He claimed that nothing had come of that promise, and they had spent his money instead. During the altercation, [VICTIM #1] said that Rodriguez entered the room with a shotgun, racked it, and pointed it at his head. [VICTIM #1] then grabbed the weapon by the barrel to remove it from his head. He stated that Rodriguez’s girlfriend, [WITNESS #1], took the gun out of the room. He also reported that during the altercation, Rodriguez struck him in the face, causing visible injuries to his hands and neck.

The Officers then went upstairs to the third floor to speak with Rodriguez and [WITNESS #1]. Rodriguez explained that he and [VICTIM #1] had a disagreement regarding the dog. He claimed he had asked [VICTIM #1] to take care of the dog while he was away, but [VICTIM #1] had not done so.

Upon returning, Rodriguez found the dog covered in urine and still in its cage. He became angry, confronted [VICTIM #1], and expressed that he had not paid rent or contributed to the household and wanted him to leave. Rodriguez insisted that no physical altercation occurred, stating he only pushed [VICTIM #1] and [WITNESS #1] apart when an argument started. He acknowledged that he may have pushed [VICTIM #1] hard enough for him to fall but claimed that if he had physically assaulted him, there would be evidence.

Initially, [WITNESS #1] stated that she had observed a physical altercation but did not see a gun involved. She mentioned that they were arguing but later said she went into the bedrooms with the dogs. The officers noted discrepancies between Rodriguez’s and [WITNESS #1]’s accounts. In a follow-up statement, [WITNESS #1] changed her story, saying she did not see the altercation but could hear it.

Based on the evidence gathered, Sergeant Beck decided to arrest Rodriguez and placed him in handcuffs behind his back. The officers sought a warrant to locate the firearm. Rodriguez then offered to voluntarily provide the weapon to avoid a warrant. He led Sergeant Beck to a bedroom on the left and showed him a closet where the gun was retrieved. The weapon appeared to be lodged between some items. Sergeant Beck took the gun as evidence and then escorted Rodriguez downstairs, where he transferred him to Deputy Ortega for transport to jail.

Due to [WITNESS #1]’s involvement, Sergeant Beck advised her of her Miranda rights, and she agreed to speak with them. She then stated that she did observe the altercation involving the gun and had taken it away from them. She put the gun in the bedroom but claimed Rodriguez had told her not to mention it. [WITNESS #1] later provided a second statement, recounting the events as she had witnessed them. Sergeant Beck then returned to duty.
