At 1015 hours on 6-5-2024, 400 Walton Way, Augusta, GA. 30901, Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, Akayla Kitchings, driving a black 2001 Dodge Neon with a GA tag of [REDACTED] pulled to the front of the Sheriff’s Office and stopped her vehicle while having an argument with the front seat passenger [REDACTED].
Kitchings then walked into the lobby of the Sheriff’s Office and began yelling for a Deputy to remove [REDACTED] from her vehicle. Sgt. Ronald Harden walked out of the lobby and asked on his county radio for assistance with a disturbance at 400 Walton Way. As Sgt. Harden walked outside of the building he began trying to ID [REDACTED] and Kitchens who were at this time involved in a heated argument. Kitchings was actively throwing [REDACTED]’s property out of her vehicle and refusing to identify herself to Sgt. Harden.
Investigators Christopher Brown, Daryl Oehrlein, Johnny Snyder, Michael Cole, Richard Palocsik, Deputy Dakota Clark and Sgt. Harden were all outside of 400 Walton Way, standing on all sides of the vehicle. All Deputies were uniformed with their badge of office displayed and giving Kitchings who appeared to be acting erratically verbal commands to exit the vehicle. Kitchings screamed “Fu*k you” at Deputies, then placed her car in reverse and began to reverse the car at a high rate of speed, then placed the car in drive fleeing the scene at a high rate of speed. While reversing and pulling forward, Kitchings almost struck Sgt. Ron Harden, Deputy Dakota Clark and Investigators Oehrlein, Snyder, Cole, and Palocsik. Multiple Deputies had to jump out of the way to stop from being hit by the vehicle.
Investigators and Deputies ran to their assigned vehicles and took chase after Kitchings. Kitchings disregarded the speed limit, failed to maintain lanes, fled at over 20 miles an hour over the posted limit of 35 miles and hour on 4th Street and Laney Walker Blvd while disregarding traffic control devices. The pursuit ended on New Savannah Road and Peters Road when Kitchings’ vehicle stalled out and suddenly came to a stop. Kitchings then jumped out of her vehicle and attempted to flee on foot from Deputies.
Investigators Snyder, Deputy Clark and Lt. James Kelley pursued Kitchings on foot and after a brief struggle Kitchings was taken into custody. Investigators Brown and Sryia arrived and assisted with taking Kitchings into custody as she was still very combative. Once in custody Kitchings began screaming that she had to get back to her kids who she left home alone at [REDACTED BY AGENCY] Blum Street.
Investigator Brown then called for the list wrecker after conducting a search of the vehicle which Kitchings abandoned on scene. C&A Towing responded to the scene and towed the vehicle. Inv. Brown was then approached by a black female who identified herself as [WITNESS #1]. [WITNESS #1] stated that she lived around the corner at [500 BLOCK] Blum Street and that Kitchings [REDACTED BY AGENCY] and [REDACTED BY AGENCY] had walked to her apartment after being left alone inside of their residence by their mother for approximately 2 hours.
Investigator Brown then responded to [500 BLOCK] Blum Street with Deputy Michael Meehan and attempted to locate the children. Once on scene Deputies spoke with [WITNESS #1] who stated that the children were gone. Deputies then went to [REDACTED BY AGENCY] Blum Street and made entry into the residence to check on the welfare of the children. Upon entry into residence Deputy Meehan located [REDACTED BY AGENCY] and [REDACTED BY AGENCY] in the top right bedroom. Inside of the residence Deputies noticed the front door to the residence was not able to be opened and the electricity was not on. Both children were in the house alone.
Investigator Brown then made contact with Kitchings sister [WITNESS #2] who responded to the residence and took custody of both children. [WITNESS #2] stated that her sister abuses drugs and has multiple problems. The residence was secured by Deputies and the Housing Authority Manager was notified of the situation.
Inv. Snyder cited Kitchings for the Fleeing and Eluding, Reckless Driving and Expired License while also completed a TIR Report under this same case number.
