On August 1, 2023 at approximately 0019 hours, I, Sgt. Misty Piper of the Griffin Police Department along with other officers responded in a non emergency mode to the area of Kevins Korner, 1580 Williamson Rd, which is located within the City of Griffin Spalding County Georgia, to a report of checking the area for a female caller who stated she was lost in the woods stuck in briers and could not get out.
Myself and other officers checked the area and got out on foot. We made contact with the female, identified as [VICTIM #1] in the woods by the road at Dender Distributing, 1550 Williamson Rd.
Ptl. Caleb Smith assisted [VICTIM #1] out of the woods, [VICTIM #1] was bare footed and visibly upset. I observed red marks under her eyes and asked her did someone hit her. She stated her husband, Shaun Fletcher had attacked her.
[VICTIM #1] appeared to be afraid and stated she did not want her husband to find her.
[VICTIM #1] stated she had walked from the area of Kevins Korner and was trying to walk to her grandmothers house in Carriage Hills but went into the woods so that Shaun would not find her.
[VICTIM #1] went and sat inside one of the patrol vehicles while we figured out what was going on. A few minutes later Shaun Fletcher walked up on scene and asked about his wife.
I asked him what had happened at Kevins Korner and he acted like he was not sure what I was talking about. I advised him I had observed marks on [VICTIM #1]s face and he stated “well I did not do it”. After trying to speak with him he continued to deny doing anything to [VICTIM #1].
Myself and MPO Betsill went over to the patrol vehicle to speak with [VICTIM #1]. My department issued body worn camera had a depleted battery so I asked MPO Betsill to go with me to speak with her.
I asked [VICTIM #1] what happened and she stated that they went to Buffalo’s, 1421 Hwy 16 and he choked her there. She further stated they then went to Kevin’s Korner and he put his hands on her there as well.
With the marks [VICTIM #1] had on her and after her testimony to me I advised Ptl. Rice to place Shaun under arrest. Ptl. Rice placed Shaun under arrest and transported him to the Spalding County Jail where he turned him over to the jail staff.
After Shaun was transported from the scene [VICTIM #1] was transported to the Police Department where I photographed her injuries and spoke with her further about what happened.
[VICTIM #1] stated that they went to Buffalo’s at approximately 1930 hours and began drinking. At approximately 2330 hours they went out into the parking lot of Buffalo’s where they got into a dispute. She stated Shaun grabbed her by her throat and put her on the ground and began to choke her.
[VICTIM #1] further stated that there were several friends there that witnessed the incident. They then left that location and drove to Kevin’s Korner where they had another physical altercation and she got out of the vehicle and fled on foot trying to get to her grandmothers house. That is when she entered the woods and got caught up in the brush and briers and called 911.
There were marks on her neck consistent with having been choked/strangled.
[VICTIM #1] also had marks under both of her eyes where it looked like she had been struck. I photographed [VICTIM #1]s injuries. She had numerous marks on her neck, face, chest, and arms.
I talked with [VICTIM #1] about domestic violence and offered her assistance through promise place.
She advised that Shaun is very abusive to her at times, especially when he drinks. She further stated that he has had a violent past with the women in his life.
[VICTIM #1] was picked up by a friend of the family.
I will obtain warrants on Shaun in the a.m. through Magistrate Judge for the offenses of Aggravated Assault (strangulation) FV and Battery FV.
The photographs will be uploaded to the Griffin Police Department public share drive under the case number.
No further action taken at this time. I returned to service.
