His Best Friend Was Murdered. Then His Own Life Was Taken Away.

In 2005, Marquez Powell was riding through Atlanta, Georgia, with his best friend, Shah Walton, when a routine night took a deadly turn. Shah was shot and killed, and Marquez became a key witness in the murder investigation. But instead of helping police solve his friend's murder, Marquez soon found himself accused of being involved. Investigators had identified another suspect, and the lead detective believed Marquez was a witness. So how did a young man who claimed to have witnessed his best friend's murder end up facing a life sentence for the very same crime? In this episode of Behind The Headlines, Joshua John examines the murder of Shah Walton, the investigation by Atlanta police, the conflicting accounts, and the evidence prosecutors used to build their case against Marquez Powell. What happened inside that car on April 18, 2005? Why did Marquez change his story when questioned by detectives? And was there more to the evidence than the jury originally heard? This Georgia true crime documentary explores a case involving murder, questionable evidence, and a fight for justice that would span decades.
