On 06/14/26, Officer Morris responded to Washington Manor Apartments, located at [700 BLOCK] Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, in reference to a report of a possible unresponsive female inside a Dodge Charger parked in the apartment complex parking lot. Officer Etheridge also responded to the scene and assisted with the investigation.
Upon arrival, officers located the subject, who was later identified as Maleigha Brooks, age 19, seated inside the vehicle. While making contact with Ms. Brooks, officers observed numerous open alcoholic beverage containers inside the vehicle. Officers also detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from both the vehicle and Ms. Brooks’ person. Throughout the encounter, Ms. Brooks displayed signs of severe intoxication, including impaired behavior, difficulty following instructions, and an overall inability to care for her own safety.
After repeated verbal commands, Ms. Brooks exited the vehicle. Once outside, she became increasingly loud, argumentative, and defensive toward officers. Ms. Brooks refused to comply with lawful commands and actively resisted officers’ attempts to detain her. Due to her behavior and level of intoxication, Officer Morris placed Ms. Brooks in handcuffs.
While escorting Ms. Brooks to a patrol vehicle, officers continued to give verbal commands for her to cooperate. Upon reaching the rear passenger compartment of the patrol vehicle, Ms. Brooks repeatedly refused to sit down despite being instructed several times to do so. As officers attempted to safely place her inside the vehicle, Ms. Brooks became physically combative and kicked Officer Morris in the facial area multiple times. The kicks caused visible marks and redness to Officer Morris’ face.
Ms. Brooks was eventually secured inside the patrol vehicle without further incident. Due to her level of intoxication and combative behavior, she was transported directly to the Washington County Jail for processing. Upon arrival, Ms. Brooks was booked on multiple charges related to her conduct during the incident.
