On Sunday, April 26, 2026 at around 1533 hrs. I, Sgt. M. Ivey, received a phone call from off-duty CID Lt. B. Dudley in reference to a possible impaired driver. Dudley stated that he was driving south on GA Hwy 15 near the intersection with Industrial Dr. and observed a silver Nissan Frontier, driving northbound on GA Hwy 15, swerving and driving erratically.
Dudley stated that the vehicle left the road on the right side and struck a sign, breaking the sign. Dudley stated that the vehicle regained control and continued driving northbound on GA Hwy 15. Dudley stated that he was able to get a description of the driver and that it was a white middle-aged male with a bright red shirt on.
I immediately started patrolling the area of GA Hwy 15 in an attempt to locate the vehicle but was unsuccessful. Shortly afterwards, Dudley called me and advised that he spoke to a third party that had also witnessed the incident and was able to identify the suspect as Robert Boatright and that he lived at [200 BLOCK] Hall Dr. in Deepstep.
I then went to the area of the collision and photographed the sign and the original placement of the sign (a metal sign for WCHS Stadium Parking). I then made contact with WCSO Deputy Maclin and Sgt. Farthing and briefed them on the incident. Maclin and Farthing advised that they would assist and go to the residence on Hall Dr. and attempt to make contact.
While WCSO units were in route to Boatright’s residence, Dudley called and advised that he had made contact with the family of Boatright at the same residence. They advised that Boatright had just gotten home, laid in the bed, and was very intoxicated. WCSO deputies arrived shortly after and advised that the Nissan Frontier, with GA tag [REDACTED], was at the residence and the hood of the vehicle was still warm. WCSO made contact with Boatright and placed him under arrest. Deputies advised that Boatright was extremely impaired and could not walk and that 2 of them had to assist Boatright into the patrol vehicle.
WCSO arrived at Sandersville PD with Boatright. When the door of the patrol vehicle was opened, I observed Boatright with his knees in the floorboard and he was laying his face on the seat. Boatright was grunting and was incoherent. Boatright had to be assisted out of the vehicle and assisted with standing and walking due to his impairment. I detected a strong odor of alcoholic beverages coming from Boatright’s person.
Boatright’s words were heavily slurred, thick, and mumbled. I observed that his face was flushed and his eyes were droopy, watered, and bloodshot. Once inside the PD, Boatright made multiple statements that were disorganized, nonsensical, and incoherent. Boatright stated that he had been asleep for hours and did not strike any objects even after the incident was investigated and he was identified.
Due to Boatright’s observed instability and inability to ambulate independently, I determined that field sobriety testing could not safely be conducted. I then read Implied Consent Warning for Subjects Over the Age of 21 and requested breath testing. Boatright consenting to the test. I attempted to take the breath sample with the department’s Intoxilyzer 900, however after the first breath sample the machine malfunctioned and displayed that it was not within tolerance. I re-read Implied Consent and requested blood testing. Boatright consented to the test.
Boatright was transported to Washington County Regional Medical Center for testing. The blood sample was drawn by Nurse [REDACTED] at 1956 hrs. The blood sample was sealed in a GBI Blood/Alcohol Kit in my presence and turned over to me. The kit was taken to Sandersville PD and entered into Evidence along with a GBI Evidence Submission Form and Inventory Form.
Boatright was fingerprinted, booked, and received citations for DUI, Leaving the Scene of an Accident with Damage, Failure to Maintain Lane, Driving with Suspended Registration, and Failure to Update Address on License. While booking Boatright, a stop sign at the intersection of Smith St. and E. McCarty St. was discovered damaged. Investigation was conducted and it was determined that Boatright had also struck the sign and did not stop. Citations were also issued to Boatright in reference to that case.
Boatright was then escorted to Washington County LEC and turned over the on-duty jail staff along with his booking report and fingerprint card.
I then returned to service.
