Officer’s Narrative:

On 06/05/2026 myself and Officer Cruz responded to [REDACTED BY AGENCY] Whitfield Extended Stay in reference to a disturbance in progress. The caller, [WITNESS #1], stated that two neighbors were in a verbal/physical altercation. While we were enroute to this location, the caller stated that the neighbors were chasing after each other and that she heard a loud bang that sounded like a gunshot from a handgun.

Once we arrived on scene, I observed multiple people on the back side of the building, standing on the balcony. They were pointing down towards room [REDACTED BY AGENCY], which is on the first floor, stating that she was inside of the room and that she had a gun that she had shot. As we were walking up to the room they were pointing at, we observed a black female in [REDACTED BY AGENCY] who had the door slightly open and was looking out of it. Once she saw officers approaching, she quickly closed the door shut.

Due to dispatch and bystanders on scene stating that the female in this room was in possession of a firearm, myself and Officer Cruz approached the door with our department issued service weapons drawn. Officer Cruz knocked on the door and announced that we were with the Dalton Police Department. After knocking and announcing multiple times, the door finally opened and a black female, later identified as Kashauna Hazel, began to step.

I oriented my service weapon at her and instructed her to put her hands in the air and to get on the ground. As she was doing so I observed another male, later identified as [WITNESS #2], in the door way. I instructed him to put his hands in the air and come outside and get on the ground. Both individuals complied with commands. Officer Cruz kept his service weapon at the lower ready while I holstered my service weapon and placed Kashauna in handcuffs and sat her in the upright position. Officer Morales then handcuffed [WITNESS #2].

At this time, I relocated to the second story and began talking to all parties involved. I began by speaking with the victim, [VICTIM #1]. He stated that at 4 o clock this morning, his wife, [VICTIM #2] who is pregnant, had to vomit this morning and ran to the bathroom. He stated that Kashauna came out and stated “ya’ll need to keep ya’lls f*cking noise down.” He stated that when he got home from work, [VICTIM #2] told him that Kashauna had been running her mouth to her all day and that she was continuing to run her mouth to them and that everytime she sees them out, she runs her mouth to them.

He stated that while he was inside changing clothes, he heard Kashauna yelling at [VICTIM #2] stating “b*tch why are you smoking? You’re being an inconsiderate mother.” He stated that he stepped out and told her to quit talking to his wife like that and that he was tired of her disrespecting her. He then stated that he told her to “get a job, go to work, and quit living off the government.” He stated that at this time, Kashauna became more irate. He stated that at this time, he went downstairs to confront her because he had reported her to management twice already about how she has been treating them.

They stated that she has been bullying other residents in the complex but that he would have to handle it on his own so he was going to go downstairs and confront her about it hoping that would help. He stated that he went downstairs and went around his car that was parked at the northwest corner of building B. He stated that he stopped at the back driver side corner of the vehicle and was pointing towards her stating “I told you to quit talking about my f*cking family.”

[VICTIM #1] stated that Kashauna was standing on the passenger side of her vehicle parked in front of room [REDACTED]. He stated that when he turned the corner of his vehicle and told her what he said, he stated that Kashauna reached into her right pocket of the shorts she was wearing and produced a handgun. [VICTIM #1] stated that she oriented the firearm in the direction of what looked like his stomach and pulled the trigger, firing the weapon at him. He stated that it scared him and he ran toward the bushes on the other side of the parking lot and that he did not know how she did not hit him.

I then spoke with [VICTIM #2]. She stated that last night, she had to throw up in the middle of the night so she ran to the bathroom. She stated that she then went outside to smoke a cigarette. She stated Kashauna then came outside and startled [VICTIM #2]. [VICTIM #2] stated that Kashauna told her “you need to keep the f*cking noise level down” and that she went back inside. She stated that they had went to pick up their kids from Lafayette had been home maybe 30 minutes.

She stated that they were outside and observed Kashauna and [WITNESS #2] outside walking their dogs. She stated that during this time, Kashauna kept looking up at them and eventually began yelling and cussing at them calling their kids “retarded” and antagonizing her and [VICTIM #1] telling them “bring your b*tch a*s down here, bring your b*tch a*s down here and Ill kick your a*s.” So at this time, she stated that [VICTIM #1] went to go downstairs and she followed him trying to get him to come back upstairs.

She stated that when they turned the corner of his vehicle, she heard a gun shot. [VICTIM #2] stated that it looked like she was going to reload it, making the hand gesture of sliding the upper receiver back on a handgun. She stated that she then grabbed [VICTIM #1] by the shirt and tried pulling him back because she believed she was going to shoot again.

I then spoke with a witness, [WITNESS #3], that was standing in her doorway of [REDACTED BY AGENCY] and observed the whole incident. She stated that she heard Kashauna cussing and yelling at [VICTIM #2] stating “come down here and Ill whoop your a*s.” She stated that Kashauna was screaming and cussing so loud that it brought a bunch of people out of their rooms and it sounded like a big fight was going on.

She stated that as soon as [VICTIM #1] and [VICTIM #2] went downstairs, she observed Kashauna open the passenger door to her vehicle. She stated that when she exited the vehicle, pointed the handgun at [VICTIM #1], and fired the weapon. [WITNESS #3] stated that she believed Kashauna retrieved the handgun from her vehicle because when she exited the vehicle, she had the handgun in her hand.

I then spoke with the caller, [WITNESS #1]. She stated that she stepped outside to smoke a cigarette and witnessed Kashauna telling [VICTIM #2] “Im gonna f*ck you up b*tch.” She stated that [VICTIM #2] and Kashauna went back and forth and she went back inside of her room, [REDACTED BY AGENCY]. She stated that is when she went back into her apartment, she heard a gunshot. When she came back outside, she stated that she Kashauna no longer had the firearm in her hand but she was still yelling at [VICTIM #2] and [VICTIM #1].

I then spoke with [WITNESS #2], the boyfriend of Kashauna. He stated that they were walking the dogs and Kashauna was complaining to [VICTIM #2] and [VICTIM #1] about the noise they have been making. He stated that “this dude referring to [VICTIM #1], began coming down stairs and telling Kashauna that he was calling her all kinds of names and going to beat her a*s and that he was going to kill her.

[WITNESS #2] stated that he was trying to calm her down when he heard [VICTIM #2] trying to stop [VICTIM #1] from coming downstairs. He stated that [VICTIM #1] came down the stairs “like a bat out of hell.” [WITNESS #2] stated that he did not know that Kashauna “had what she had on her” referencing the firearm. He stated that he went into the room and when he came back out, all he heard was a shot. He stated that he asked her “what the hell did you do?” And at the time, the police showed up. I then asked [WITNESS #2] if he observed where Kashauna had the weapon oriented and he stated that she had shot up in the air.

I then advised Kashauna of her miranda rights to which she stated that she did wish to speak to me. She stated that her and [WITNESS #2] went outside to walk their dogs. She stated that they split up and she took the trash to the dumpsters. She stated that when she was walking back “they were already on the balcony” she stated that she believes that they were mad because she had reported them to management twice already. She stated that they began to “have words” about that and began going back and forth. She stated that [VICTIM #1] then threatened her saying that she was going to “do things to her.”

She stated that [VICTIM #2] then tried to jump in and argue with her but that she did not engage and just told her “you’re pregnant keep your stress levels low and just go back into the house.” She stated that [VICTIM #1] then told her that he was going to “beat her a*s” that he was going to come downstairs and “f*ck her up” and that “she needed to go to sleep and that he would put her to sleep.” She stated that at this time, [VICTIM #1] ran down the stairs and the women tried to stop him and that they were unsuccessful. She stated that he came into the parking lot and began making threats to her.

She stated that at this time, she pulled her handgun out of her right pocket and fired it. She stated that she did not fire it at [VICTIM #1] but she fired a “warning shot” into the woods to the east of the b building. She stated that she did it in self defense because [VICTIM #1] had been making threats to her and when he came down the stairs, she thought he was coming for her stating “why else would he come downstairs?” I then asked why she had her passenger door open. She stated that she was going to sit inside and smoke a cigarette. I asked if she retrieved the firearm from the passenger side of her vehicle and she stated no that it was in her pocket the whole time.

She stated that she keeps it in her pocket when she is walking her dog in case another dog tries to attack her dog. I then asked why, when she observed us approaching her door, she quickly closed the door and did not come out immediately when commands were given. She stated “I wanted to have everything ready for y’all when I came out.” When I asked for clarification about what she meant she stated “I wanted to have my identification ready for yall.” I then asked Kashauna if she had made any threats back to [VICTIM #1] while he was allegedly threatening her and she stated no that the only thing she said was that she was “not his woman and you cant beat on me like you do her.”

I then went back to the second floor where I was made aware that [VICTIM #2] and [VICTIM #1]’s daughter, [REDACTED BY AGENCY] had recorded part of the verbal altercation between [VICTIM #2], [VICTIM #1], and Kashauna. These videos are a total of around 4:03 minutes in length. In the audio/video recording, I observed all three subjects arguing with each other. During this time, it appeared that Kashauna was the primary aggressor yelling at [VICTIM #2] and [VICTIM #1] and ultimately Kashauna telling [VICTIM #1] “nobody gives a f*ck about you, if you feeling the way you feeling then come downstairs. If you feeling froggy, then come and leap. Come down with it, come down with it.”

[VICTIM #1] responded back, in a rather calm voice, with “Im coming, Im coming. Im not coming down there little girl, Im not coming down there little girl. I dont touch women.” The rest of the video is the two parties going back and forth, arguing with each other.

At this time, I approached Kashauna and asked her to listen to the video/audio recordings and tell me if that was her speaking. When Kashauna was saying “if you feeling a way, then come downstairs. Come down with it, come down with it. If you feeling froggy then jump down here” I asked her if that was her talking, she looked at me and stated “it might be.” I continued to let the video play and she stated “yeah” and I confirmed by asking her so that’s you? And she stated “yeah.” These audio/video clips will be attached to this report.

At this time, I asked Kashauna where the handgun was located. She stated that it should be on the table and that if it was not on the table, it would be inside of her purse. I asked where the table was located inside of the room. She stated that it was to the left, underneath the window as you walk into the room. I asked Kashauna if she would consent to me going inside of her room and retrieving the handgun. She stated that I could go inside and get the handgun. Myself and Sgt Williams then entered the room and I observed a purse sitting on the table. I looked inside of the purse and observed a black high point .380 Acp inside of the purse. I took custody of the handgun and placed it into property and evidence at the Dalton Police Department.

After listening to all statements involved from witnesses and all parties, listening to the audio/video clips provided to me by [WITNESS #4] and the details of Kashauna’s rather aggressive behavior towards [VICTIM #2] and [VICTIM #1], Kashauna provoking [VICTIM #1] and repeatedly telling him to come downstairs, and the fact that Kashauna left out these key details in her statement, I had probable cause that led me to believe that this was not an act of self defense on Kashauna’s behalf but rather an act to use a deadly weapon to inflict bodily harm upon [VICTIM #2] and [VICTIM #1].

At this time, I informed Kashauna that she was being placed under arrest. I escorted her to the front of my vehicle and conducted a search incident to arrest of her person. I then placed her in the back seat of my vehicle and buckled her seatbelt. Kashauna is a US citizen. I then transported her to the Whitfield County Jail. Upon arrival, I secured my service weapon in a lock box in the sally port. I then escorted Kashauna inside where she was handed over to the booking staff. I then filled out warrantless arrest form #71224 for the following charges.

• OCGA 16-11-106 Possession of firearm during the commission of a felony
• OCGA 16-5-60 (B) Reckless conduct
• OCGA 16-11-37 Terroristic threats

After I ensured that the booking staff did not need anything else from me, I retrieved my service weapon and conducted a search of my back seat before returning to service.

Management for the Whitfield Extended Stay advised me that they wished to have both Kashauna and [WITNESS #2] trespassed from the property. They were both given notice that they have been trespassed form the property and stated that they understood. I also spoke with management in reference to receiving video footage. They stated that they were working on getting the times and transferring the video and will inform me when it is ready. The video will placed into property and evidence once received.
