On 01/29/2026, while conducting normal patrol in the area near the intersection of Dug Gap Mountain Battle Rd and Battle Park Dr, I observed a red Ford Fusion bearing Georgia tag [REDACTED BY AGENCY] stopped on the shoulder of the eastbound lane. Due to the vehicle’s position and appearance, I believed it may have been involved in a recent single-vehicle accident.
I also observed a male and female standing on the side of the roadway engaged in a verbal argument. The individuals were later identified as Brody Kiyler Betts and Katlin Anne Wilson. I pulled alongside them and asked if they needed assistance. Wilson stated they believed they may have struck something and had stopped to check for damage.
I positioned my patrol vehicle behind the Ford Fusion and activated my emergency lights. I exited my patrol vehicle and made contact with Betts on the passenger side of the vehicle. Betts stated they had hit something and stopped to inspect the vehicle.
While speaking with Betts, I detected a strong odor of marijuana emitting from the vehicle. I questioned Betts regarding the odor, and he denied possessing marijuana, stating the odor may have been from a THC vape pen.
While speaking with Wilson on scene, I observed that she had visible marks and redness on her face consistent with possible recent injury, such as being struck. I asked Wilson about the marks on her face and whether she wanted to make a statement regarding how she received the injuries. Wilson stated that she did not want to make a statement regarding the injuries. When questioned further, Wilson became visibly emotional, began to cry, and looked away, but continued to decline providing any additional information.
I requested identification from both Betts and Wilson. Both stated they had lost their driver’s licenses but provided their names and dates of birth. I ran their information through dispatch, which advised that Betts had an active warrant, warrant number W26-56, for a violation of O.C.G.A. 16-6-8(b).
Due to the odor of marijuana, I requested additional units to assist with a probable cause vehicle search. While waiting, Betts repeatedly attempted to walk from the rear of the vehicle toward the front. I instructed him twice to remain near the rear of the vehicle.
I observed Betts wearing a black puffy jacket zipped closed with a large, noticeable bulge in the front. Betts then walked to the front passenger side of the vehicle and bent down as if inspecting damage underneath the car. When he returned, the bulge in his jacket was no longer present. Due to these observations, I activated my in-car camera to document the incident.
Officer Wingate and Officer Mendez arrived on scene. Officer Wingate remained with Betts and Wilson while Officer Mendez and I conducted a probable cause search of the vehicle based on the odor of marijuana.
Prior to the search, I asked Betts if there was anything illegal in the vehicle. Betts stated, “I have a gun in there.”
During my search of the driver side, I located four opened Fireball alcoholic shooter bottles in the center console. Officer Mendez advised that she located a handgun in the rear passenger seat area. The firearm was checked through dispatch and returned clear with no wants.
I located a pill container in the center console compartment where sunglasses are stored bearing the name [REDACTED BY AGENCY] containing approximately 16 Xanax (alprazolam) pills. The label had a quantity of 60 prescribed pills, a Schedule IV controlled substance. Some of the pills in the container were broken in half. Officer Mendez located an additional empty pill container bearing the same name that contained a white crystal-like substance. The substance was later field tested and returned positive for methamphetamine.
After the vehicle search was completed, both Betts and Wilson were searched. Betts was placed under arrest on his active warrant and secured in the rear seat of Officer Wingate’s patrol vehicle.
I then recalled Betts’ actions at the front of the vehicle. I walked to that area and immediately detected a stronger odor of marijuana. Due to a suspected item under the vehicle, I moved the vehicle slightly in reverse. Once the vehicle was moved, Officer Wingate located a large clear plastic bag containing a significant amount of marijuana. The marijuana was packaged separately in a manner consistent with distribution and was located in the same area where Betts had previously been observed bending down.
Officer Mendez read Miranda rights to Wilson, and Officer Wingate read Miranda rights to Betts.
I contacted Sgt Parker and Lt Lowery and advised them of the incident. I then contacted Detective Morang with the drug unit, who advised that both subjects needed to be transported to the Dalton Police Department for interviews.
The vehicle was towed by Frank’s Towing. I transported Wilson to the Dalton Police Department, and Officer Wingate transported Betts.
Upon arrival at the police department, Wilson was placed in a separate interview room. I remained with her until Detective Morang arrived and conducted an interview. Detective Morang then proceeded to interview Betts.
While waiting, I heard a loud noise consistent with a struggle. I immediately responded and was advised by Detective Morang that Betts attempted to flee the interview room while under arrest and in the custody of Detective Morang. During the attempted escape, Betts shoulder-checked Detective Morang. Detective Morang was able to stop Betts before he could escape further.
Due to these actions, Betts was charged with felony escape in violation of O.C.G.A. 16-10-52.
Wilson was secured in a seatbelt and transported to the Whitfield County Jail on warrant number W26-195 for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. My patrol car was searched before and after transport. Once I arrived at the jail my weapon was properly secured before entering the jail. I transferred custody and all property to the booking staff.
Betts was transported to the Whitfield County Jail by Officer Wingate and Officer Mendez on warrant number W26-194 and W26-56 for the following charges:
- Possession of marijuana with intent to distribute
- Possession of a Schedule IV controlled substance (Xanax) with intent to distribute
- Possession of methamphetamine
- Posssession of a firearm during the commission of a felony
- Felony obstruction of a law enforcement officer
- Felony escape
