On 01-07-26 myself and Officer Pressley responded to W Walnut Ave at I-75 south exit ramp in reference to a hit and run. Dispatch advised that the caller and the offender had pulled into the nearby KFC parking lot after the accident. The caller advised that the offender told her he did not have insurance and threw money towards the caller and left the scene. The caller advised the driver was a white male in his 60’s with gray hair wearing a dark jacket and driving a black Ford Mustang with Ga tag #[REDACTED]. I ran this tag while on the way to the scene and saw that it does have valid insurance.
Upon my arrival Officer Pressley had already spoken to the caller, [VICTIM #1], and asked dispatch to have a county deputy check the listed address for the Mustang at [REDACTED BY AGENCY]. I spoke with the [VICTIM #1] who stated that she was behind the Mustang on the I-75 south exit ramp waiting to turn left on to W Walnut Ave. She stated that the Mustang started rolling backwards and hit the front of her vehicle. She said that the light turned green and she followed the Mustang to the KFC parking lot and spoke with the male driving the Mustang.
She said he told her to hang on for a minute and went inside KFC to get his food. She said when he came back outside he told her he did not have insurance and threw 2 $100 bills toward her, got into his vehicle, and left the scene. [VICTIM #1] stated that they had not made any arrangement for the suspect to pay her. She said he did not even discuss it with her but just threw money toward her and left.
Dispatch advised me that Whitfield County deputy had located the suspect vehicle at that address. I asked if they had made contact with the driver of the vehicle and was advised that they did. I had dispatch connect me by phone with Deputy Bandy. He stated that the male had told him that he had been involved in the accident and left the scene. I asked the deputy to arrest the driver and transport him to W.C.S.O. to meet with me. The deputy agreed and transported the subject to W.C.S.O. booking.
I relocated to W.C.S.O. booking and secured my duty weapon in a lock box in my vehicle. I entered the booking area and Deputy Bandy arived shortly after with the suspect who was identified as Kenney Wade Jeffrey. Once Kenney was through the intake process in booking I read him the miranda warning from my department issued card. Kenney agreed to speak with me. I asked Kenney how the accident happened. He stated that his vehicle is a straight shift and that he had pushed the clutch in and his vehicle rolled backwards. He said that his vehicle bumped into the other vehicle before he could stop.
I asked him why he had not stayed at the accident scene to wait for officers. He stated that he gave the other driver, [VICTIM #1], $200 cash and she agreed that would take care of it. I asked him if he told her that he did not have insurance. He said that he did tell her that but that he does have insurance and just wanted to handle it by paying her for the damage.
I charged Kenney Jeffrey with Improper Backing 40-6-240 on citation #521624, Leaving the scene of an accident 40-6-270 on citation #521625, and Expired Registration 40-2-8 on citation #521626. Kenney was turned over to booking officers without incident. Deputy Bandy’s report number for his assistance is 202600109.
