While on routine patrol, I was sitting stationary on Frontier Trail facing west and noticed a black Toyota pickup pass by me. As it passed, the license plate reader on my patrol vehicle alerted me that the owner of the vehicle has a revoked license. I pulled out and began to catch up with the Toyota. It had turned left onto Santa Fe Trail and then right onto Cheyenne Trail.
As I caught up to the vehicle at the 200 block of Cheyenne Trail, the driver pulled onto the opposite side of the road, parked and got out. I was calling the tag into dispatch and advising them of my location. The driver began walking toward me and I pointed for him to go back to his vehicle. He came toward me a couple times and each time, I pointed at his vehicle.
Once I exited my patrol car, I asked the driver if he knew why I had stopped him. He said because of his license. I asked him what was going on and he said he was travelling. He said that he was a free man and had the right to travel under the constitution. I asked the driver if he had any weapons and patted him down for my safety. I found brass knuckles in his right back pocket and a pocket knife in his right front pocket. I told him to stay where he was and approached the vehicle. As I did, the driver told me there was a deer rifle in the back seat.
I went back to speak with the driver and he was becoming very agitated. He had told me when I was checking him for weapons that I was feeling him up. He kept talking over me so I decided to place him into investigative custody until I could find out what was going on with his license. I put him in the back seat of my patrol car and let dispatch know what was going on.
I retrieved the drivers ID and confirmed him to be Stanley Jonathon Russell. Chief Moreno arrived on the scene and I asked him to check the status of Mr Russells’s license. Chief Moreno confirmed that Mr. Russell’s license suspension date is 05-21-2013. Chief Moreno also advised me that the registration on the Toyota is suspended. Lt. Small arrived on the scene and both he and Chief Moreno spoke with Mr Russell. Chief Moreno advised me that there was a deer rifle and 9mm pistol inside the vehicle. At this time, I called for the list wrecker which was union point towing and took an inventory of the vehicle.
I took both the deer rifle, a Remington 30/06 and a Taurus 9mm pistol and turned them over to Lt. Small. I also took the brass knuckles and pun them into an evidence locker. There was an American Pro 600 watt amp and a black bazooka sub in the back seat of the Toyota. There were also some misc screwdrivers and Allen wrenches in the truck. I then took Mr Russell to the Whitfield County Jail without incident.
