Accessibility

The Georgia Gazette wants every reader to be able to use this site, including people who rely on screen readers, keyboard navigation, magnification or other assistive technology. We work toward the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA, the standard referenced under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

What we have done

  • A “Skip to content” link is the first item on every page for keyboard users.
  • Every page is organised with landmarks (header, navigation, main content, footer) and a page heading so screen readers can move around quickly.
  • The menu, search and dark-mode controls work with a keyboard, and every focused element shows a visible outline.
  • Article photos carry text alternatives, and links are named so they make sense out of context.
  • Text and link colours meet the WCAG AA contrast ratio in light mode and dark mode.
  • The site can be zoomed to at least 200 percent and works on phones, tablets and desktops.
  • We test with automated tools and keyboard-only use after site changes.

Known limitations

Some content comes from third parties and is outside our direct control: advertising delivered by our ad partners, embedded forms and video players, and the sign-in buttons from Google and Apple. We pass accessibility problems with these on to the providers. Some older archived articles may have photos without descriptive text; we are correcting these as they are found.

Tell us if something is not working

If any part of this site is hard to use with assistive technology, or you need an article in another format, email support@thegeorgiagazette.com with the page address and a short description of the problem. We aim to reply within two business days.
