On September 5th, 2026, at approximately 2220 hours, I (Deputy Wright S122) was conducting routine patrol for the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office. While in the area of Loganville Hwy/University Pkwy, I observed a black Ford Edge ([REDACTED]/GA) turn right onto the University Pkwy eastbound on-ramp. I turned left onto the on-ramp behind his vehicle. As we both began to go down the on-ramp, the Ford Edge rapidly accelerated down the ramp onto University Pkwy. I first visually estimated the vehicle to be traveling at 90 MPH in a 65 MPH zone. I activated my front radar antenna and confirmed the vehicle’s speed at 95 MPH. The driver of the Ford Edge continued to accelerate, and I ultimately locked the vehicle’s speed at 117 MPH in a 65 MPH zone. As the driver approached Harry McCarty Rd at 117 MPH, he came up behind some vehicles very quickly, nearly striking the rear of one of the vehicles.

The driver of the Ford Edge then tailgated the vehicle in front of them and then narrowly split the gap between two vehicles, almost causing a wreck. I activated my emergency blue lights and sirens to conduct a stop at University Pkwy/Christmas Ave for the offense. With my lights and sirens activated, the driver continued to slow roll at 90 MPH until it came to a stop halfway in the left lane/shoulder.

Upon approach to the vehicle, I made contact with the driver, Corey McClendon. Immediately, I could smell the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his breath and saw that he had bloodshot, watery eyes. Corey stated he was on his way to work. I asked him where he worked, and he stated it was right next to his house in Norcross on Jimmy Carter Blvd. I asked Corey if he knew where he was because he was going the complete opposite direction of Norcross, to which he replied that he must have gotten lost.

Corey would go on to say he had just left a family member’s house in Lawrenceville, where they had a party. I asked Corey if he had any alcoholic beverages to drink. He said that he only had a couple of drinks. I returned to my vehicle and ran Corey’s information through GCIC. I returned to Corey and asked him to exit the vehicle. I asked Corey if he would be willing to participate in any Standardized Field Sobriety Test (SFST). Corey refused to participate in any of the evaluations. Corey also refused to provide a breath sample in the PBT.

Due to Corey driving his vehicle at 117 MPH in a 65 MPH zone while tailgating and making rapid lane changes. Along with his admission to consuming alcoholic beverages, strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his breath, bloodshot/watey eyes, slurred speech, and complete loss of his sense of direction, I developed probable cause to place Corey under arrest for DUI and reckless driving. Corey was placed in handcuffs behind his back (double locked and checked for fit). I then read him the Implied Consent notice for persons over 21 years old. Corey refused to provide a blood sample. He was then secured in the rear of my patrol vehicle with a seatbelt.

I then transported him to the Barrow County Detention Center, where he was released to the jail staff. While there, he was issued citations for DUI less safe, reckless driving, and speeding. Upon conducting an impound inventory of the vehicle, a firearm was located inside the vehicle. This firearm was collected and submitted into evidence for safekeeping. Sgt. Smith remained on scene with Corey’s vehicle until it was impounded and removed by All Around Towing.
