On May 6, 2026, at approximately 0252 hours, I, Officer Smith, responded to an accident without injuries at 316 and Barber Creek RD. Per call notes, a driver passing by the accident alerted 911 to the incident.
Upon arrival, I was met by the driver, identified as Woodward Young, who was involved in the single-vehicle accident. Young refused medical attention and reported no injuries on scene. While on scene, I was able to observe disabling damage done to Young’s vehicle. The vehicle in question is a 2019 Mercedes-Benz that sustained heavy front-end damage, along with the airbag in the driver’s side area being deployed from the steering wheel and underneath the steering wheel. I also observed approximately 60 yards of guardrail damage from the collision.
I spoke with Young, and he stated he was leaving a concert and he was heading back to his home in Athens when he fell asleep while driving, which he stated caused the collision. I then asked Young if he had anything to drink previously, and Young stated he had 1 beer earlier in the evening. Gathering this information, I asked Young for consent to search the vehicle, to which he agreed. While conducting the search, I was able to locate open alcoholic beverages inside the vehicle. I then requested the on-scene deputy S149 to conduct a field sobriety test to determine if Young was currently under the influence.
Per S149 findings, he was able to detect clues of impairment in Young’s behavior and body language. After being made aware of this, I informed Young that he was being placed under arrest, and I proceeded to read him the implied consent for suspects over the age of 21. Upon reading it twice, it was refused for the chemical testing of blood. I then handcuffed Young behind his back, double-locked, checked for proper fitting, and placed him into the back of my marked patrol vehicle. Myles Wrecker arrived on scene and took possession of the vehicle.
I then advised Young that I would be transporting him to the hospital due to his being involved in a vehicle collision. Young then insinuated he would like to do a chemical test for blood, and upon our arrival at the hospital, I reread Implied consent for suspects over the age of 21, which was refused by Young for a third time. Young was evaluated by Northeast Georgia Medical Center Barrow staff and was cleared, and I transported him to the Barrow County Detention Center with no further incident.
A 1205 form, vehicle impound form, and citation were completed and placed into Young’s property at the Detention Center.
